AbstractAbstract
[en] The presentation deals with the contamination of the Ruzin dam waters by heavy metals. The dam is located on the Hornad river, in the north-eastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains. The fours rivers, which discharge into the dam (Hornad, Hnilec, Bela and Opatka), flow through the area with historically, as well as presently, intensive mining, mineral processing and metallurgical activities. The wastes generated by such activities are sources of metals, which penetrate into the surface waters and consequently into the stream deposits. The surface water contains elevated content of copper, mercury and zinc, which are the reason behind the water quality is classified as polluted to very polluted (grade 3-5) , from the point of the micropollutant content. The stream deposits show elevated content of Cu, Zn, Hg and Mn, which several times exceed the allowed values. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The character of the Tesin region is a result of thousand year of human activity, influencing and changing its single elements. Industry development in last two centuries, especially high mining activity following by the relief formation influenced the Tesinsko region destiny. Besides, there is natural biota destruction. Suitable biota decline and continual number of endangered fauna and flora species are infallible warning signals that refer to growing strain of environment. On the other hand it is necessary to emphasize that a lot of species of organisms pushed away from their natural spots find their new place just in the most mine work affected area. The subsidence depression present the most extensive change of the relief. High level of ground water causes flooded dropped basins, that are settled with community of flora and fauna. Thus subsidence depression - common feature of mining region are created. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Article deals with evaluating of adequacy of smokestack height from combustion device designed in a single boiler room. Appropriate value of smokestack height conducted waste gases into open air must meet not only emission limits and legislation from the field of the air protection according the Act N. 478/2002 Code, but also criteria - emission limits of pollutants stated in regulation N. 705/2002 Code, which are in compliance with Directives from the field of EU environment. Study evaluates suggested building of boiler room, which will use waste wood as a fuel. Adequacy of height of smokestack was verify by monitoring of five pollutants dispersion. Calculated values of the pollutants concentration emitted in the open air affirm suitability of suggested smokestack height (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim of this contribution is to introduce the novel method of monitoring of organic contaminants in aqueous environment. This lecture is concerned with passive sampling devices that eliminate the limitations of conventional water sampling. Spot samples reflect residue composition only at the moment of sampling and may fail to detect fluctuating concentration. Most conventional approaches are not suitable for measurement of the truly dissolved (bioavailable) fraction, and due to trace levels of contamination, the concentration of analytes is often below the detection limits even if laboratory equipment of high quality is used. Passive sampling devices work in an integrative mode and allow us to estimate time-weighted average (TWA) concentration in water environment (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Lake sediments provide a useful source of information on the history of lake ecosystem and its contamination. In order to obtain the data, one must collect an undisturbed sediment core sample and investigate the sediment layers chronology. This is often done by radiometric dating, based on the known history of fallout radionuclides atmospheric deposition. This paper shows the analysis of sediment profile collected from water reservoir Bakomi, near Banska Stiavnica city. 137Cs activity was analyzed by HPGe gamma-spectrometry and the results are discussed. AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim of this paper is the evaluation of anthropogenic loading of upper Hron's catchment area, that is the valley surrounded with mountains. It is the narrow stripe with stream, with varied radial and longitudinal structure and with hard conditions for spreading the pollutants. The climate situation of Hron's catchment area belongs to European continental region of temperate zone with ocean air masses, which are changed by continental way. Contemporary landscape structure is a result of long-time human impact on the landscape. The human impact intensity influenced both the proportion of stability and quality of landscape system. In the paper is evaluated the pollutants amount (1, 2) drained from main contamination sources into air and Hron river. Pollutants are evaluated especially from the point of view of their hazardous chemical properties (3) that are the leading factor in the disturbing process of natural balance of water ecosystem. Beside the mentioned facts, the great negative influence, on chemical substances balance at this locality, has dealing with waste too. There is a review of dangerous waste production.which is influenced mainly by metallurgical (Zeleziarne, a.s., Podbrezova), petrochemical (Petrochema, a.s. Dubova), pharmaceutical industry (Biotika, a.s., Slovenska Lupca) (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Monitoring water samples from boreholes collected from 7 locations by approved methods suitable for the determination of anthropogenic radionuclides in the locality of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Jaslovske Bohunice is described. Monitoring program consists of the determination of volume activity of tritium, strontium-90, gamma radionuclides (60Co, 137Cs, 40K), alpha radionuclides (239,240Pu, 241Am ) and gross beta activity. 450 samples for tritium volume activity, 80 samples for strontium-90, 65 samples for gamma radionuclides and 65 samples for gross beta were analyzed during the year 2006. The main result from the monitoring program of underground water is that radionuclide contamination of water in the NPP Jaslovske Bohunice locality is low because concentrations of radionuclides in water are much below the recommended limit. The radionuclides detected in the water samples do not seem to pose any radiological consequence on the sample population. (authors)
