  • 🔹 Pushing back the boundaries: a chat with ETF's Stefan Thomas 🔹 Although Sub-Saharan #Africa may seem a long way from the European Union, it is a region that has begun to feature prominently in the work of the ETF. The socio-economic integration of an increasing youth population – it is projected to reach 413 million in 2050, according to the World Bank – into rapidly changing societies is a huge challenge for African countries, and for their VET systems in particular. One person who knows that challenge well is Stefan Thomas, the European Training Foundation's Senior Human Capital Development Expert on work-based learning and vocational excellence. "The EU channels a lot of money into VET in Sub-Saharan Africa," he explains. "So there is huge demand for advice, both in the EU delegations and the countries themselves. With its specialised expertise, the ETF can definitely play a supporting role" Stefan's career history marks him out for that role. After working in the vocational education and training system in his native Germany for several years, he joined the German development agency GIZ in Ethiopia to support the reform of the country's technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system. After a stint at GIZ headquarters, where he also worked as an advisor to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, he went to Albania to develop an educational reform project, before refocusing on Sub-Saharan Africa as an international expert in countries such as Malawi, South Sudan and Zimbabwe. • 🔹 30 years, 30+ stories: ETF in the rest of the world, from Africa to Southeast Asia 🔹 Having covered 26 partner countries, 13 former partners now full EU member states and 2 regional projects this year, today we look at the European Training Foundation's work around the globe. Since 1994, the ETF has worked in over 40 countries on three continents to support human capital and development through education. So far we have collected stories from 39 countries, but over the decades the ETF's support has spanned the whole of Eurasia, from Iceland to Mongolia.  The ETF worked with Russia from the 1990s, but all relations were severed following the war of aggression against Ukraine, where the ETF's solidarity and support has been strong from day one. For the same reasons, and due to a deteriorating human rights situation, cooperation with Belarus has been suspended in 2022. Following the escalation of violence and the unacceptable human rights situation, relations with Syria have been suspended since 2011. The country has recently experienced unexpected developments after terribly difficult years. They give hope that change is always just around the corner, and that any uncertainty is better than a stark reality. Despite these difficulties and challenging situations in some countries, the ETF stands for EU values and supports the development of human capital as the key to democracy, prosperity and competitiveness. In fulfilling its mandate as an international knowledge hub on skills development, the ETF has supported the work of EU delegations and governments outside its formalised partner countries through technical assistance, knowledge sharing and policy advice. One continent of clear preeminence is #Africa, a key priority for the EU. The major project in Africa with a visible ETF involvement is the ACQF-II. In partnership with the African Union (AU) Commission, the AU Member States and Regional Economic Communities, the ETF has been entrusted with the management of the EU-supported project “Support to implementation of the African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF)” project (2023-2026). • 🔹 30 Years, 30+ Stories: Israel, enhancing vocational education through Erasmus+ 🔹   Through EU-funded instruments, the European Training Foundation has supported key #skills development initiatives in Israel over the years, in line with the EU-#Israel cooperation priorities. The ETF's recent cooperation with the Israeli authorities has included policy advice for the development of the Israeli National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and the exchange of expertise between various ministries and research institutions. This cooperation includes as well Israeli participation in ETF networks such as SkillsLab, the ETF Network for #Excellence (ENE) and the READY model: the latter has been tested in practice under a partnership on Innovation in Teaching and Learning, conducted through the Amal and Ort education networks, which have started piloting a model on the "New Educator Profile in a Changing World" in 2023.
