It was lovely for our chair Steph L. to catch up with Bradley Tosso. Planning for next years events are already underway.
JohnPaul Rodriguez and Bradley Tosso attended the Global Privacy Assembly (“GPA”) in Jersey, themed – the “Power of I”. ✅ Individuals & Information 1️⃣ PROTECTING CHILDREN- threat to children in focus. 2️⃣ VOICE– GPA panel of school children recognised value of tech but highlighted threats to freedom, privacy and personal/social development. Called for accountability from tech and privacy education. 3️⃣ DPA INITIATIVES– tangible initiatives include 1) Controls e.g. EdTech Privacy Charter for Schools (Ontario); 2) Supporting responsible innovation e.g. Sandbox on Education Credential (UK); 3) Education (e.g. Burkino Faso), and 4) Partnerships e.g. GPA + UNICEF. 4️⃣ VULNERABLE– Risk-based approach to prioritise the most vulnerable. 5️⃣ In the humanitarian context data protection = saving lives. 3rd ed. DP in Humanitarian Action published. 6️⃣ Breaches cause greater emotional harm to individuals with mental health conditions. 7️⃣ “An admin error” can have devastating consequences - imagine a person who has recently escaped an abusive relationship, only to have their confidential address exposed due to a data breach. 8️⃣ Māori proverb - “What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people”. ✅Innovation 1️⃣ AI, immersive tech, etc. represent progress but it is necessary to mitigate threats - “Prepare today for a better tomorrow”; “By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail”. 2️⃣ Innovative regulation helps navigate the evolving landscape. Sandboxes and CNIL’s Digital Innovation Lab - examples of proactive initiatives. 3️⃣ PETs should be recognised and incentivised. 4️⃣ FRT and CBDC papers adopted by Tech WG; and, work by CoE on Neurotechnology and Neural Data. ✅Integrity & Independence 1️⃣ Transition of power from ruling class to people is arguably one of the most impactful innovations in history, paving the way for a rules/rights based order for honest trade to fuel thriving economies. ✅International & Intercultural 1️⃣ Create common int. standards but recognise diverse circumstances (varying cultures, economies, development, laws, etc.) - one size does not fit all. 2️⃣ Int. cooperation “Alone we can do so little together we can do so much”. 3️⃣ Financial Services ("FS") panels showcased the importance of int. data flows. The GRA’s Bradley Tosso, featured in a panel on cross border payments alongside Bermuda’s Alexander McD White, Dubai's Lori Baker, Singapore's Denise Wong and FATF's Elisa de Anda Madrazo, highlighting the intrinsic relationship between privacy, trust and finance, 2) initiatives to support innovation, and 3) DPAs and FS collboration being of paramount importance. 4️⃣ GRA/Jersey MOU ✅Indigenous 1️⃣ Ensure inclusion in our digital journey - comms and tech need to factor in the needs of indigenous communities. 2️⃣ The implications of data protection varies on many factors, but the universal quality is the “respect of the individual and their dignity” – Massimo Marelli(ICRC).
