🌍 New blog alert! : Bridging Science and Action: Bringing Understandings of Vulnerability and Climate Attribution Closer We're excited to share this thought-provoking blog authored by Dr. Joyce Kimutai, from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment, Emmanuel Raju, Copenhagen Center for Disaster Research (COPE) and Laura Rabago, CGIAR Climate Impact Platform As climate change intensifies, understanding its impact on agriculture is more critical than ever. Surface temperatures in Africa are rising faster than the global average, significantly affecting agri-food systems. Climate #AttributionScience (CAS) is emerging as a vital tool to: 🔬 Identify the extent of human-induced #ClimateChange on extreme weather events. 🌱 Inform #ClimateAdaptation strategies in agriculture. 🌍 Integrate vulnerability assessments to address socio-economic factors affecting communities. The blog highlights the CAV-Kenya project, an interdisciplinary initiative aiming to merge CAS with socio-political understandings of vulnerability. By leveraging CAS, decision-making, resource allocation, and supporting communities most affected by climate change can be more effective. 👉 Read the full blog to explore how attribution science is contributing to shaping the future of #ClimateAction in agriculture to build a more sustainable and resilient agri-food system.: https://lnkd.in/dUiqGjvs Copenhagen Center for Disaster Research (COPE), School of Global Health, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH , Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut, Patricia Nying'uro, HSC , susan lebuluz, Imperial College London

🌍 COP29 Key Takeaways, Negotiations, Side Events and Coverage As the curtains close on #COP29 in Baku, we reflect on two weeks of intense negotiations, side events, and critical discussions. Branded as the “Finance COP,” this year’s conference set the stage for key conversations about global climate goals, adaptation, and finance. At CGIAR, we viewed these through the lens of food systems and agriculture. CGIAR played a significant role in advancing these dialogues. From hosting 44+ events at the Food and Agriculture Pavilion to leading 8 official UN Climate Change sessions, including a key session on Food and Agriculture Day, we championed the integration of science and innovation into climate solutions. Our team also launched 9 Issue Briefs, produced 11 Daily Briefs, and shared critical reflections, ensuring that the intersections of food systems, finance, and equity were well-represented in global discussions. 💡 Key Outcomes from COP29: New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG): USD 300 billion annually by 2035, scaling up finance to USD 1.3 trillion. Article 6 Adoption Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA): Launch of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap. Gender & Climate Change: Extension of the Lima Work Programme for another decade. Agriculture and Food Security: Adoption of the Sharm-el-Sheikh Joint Work text. Loss and Damage Fund: Now operational, with pledges reaching $759 million Catch Up on COP29: Did you miss our daily updates? 🎬 Loss and Damage in the #Agrifood sector – CGIAR's Climate Impact Platform video series 🌍 In our latest Issue Brief Series for Informing COP 29, we highlighted The true costs of loss and damage (L&D) in the agrifood sector. As #COP29 negotiations on L&D progress, watch our latest video to discover how L&D impacts food security, livelihoods, and global resilience—and what actions are urgently needed: 🌾 Agriculture is among the most weather-exposed sectors, making it particularly vulnerable to climate-induced L&D, with many vulnerable people dependent on this sector for their livelihood. 📊 Alarmingly, only about 35% of current climate action plans address L&D—underscoring the urgency of targeted solutions, especially in nations prioritizing agriculture. 💡 Currently under discussion at #COP29, the operationalization of the L&D Fund must prioritize agriculture, focusing on smallholders to safeguard food security and protect the livelihoods of the most vulnerable. 📺 Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/dFzPuxw7

One year on from the launch of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation, we celebrated the progress made by member countries during Food, Agriculture and Water Day at #COP29, inspiring others to follow their lead, and urging governments & financial institutions to deliver #climatefinance for #foodsystems. We are delighted that the Government of Tanzania has now announced its intention to join the Alliance, and we very much look forward to seeing what they achieve in partnership with existing members. Here is just a taste of what has been achieved by member countries in the last year: In Brazil, the promotion of sustainable agroforestry practices via a National Program for Productive Forests (Programa Nacional de Florestas Produtivas). In Cambodia, the deployment of 1,600 agriculture officers in agricultural communes across the country, developing modern agricultural cooperatives to improve access to markets, capital and water. In Norway, an annual policy dialogue with farming unions to negotiate policy measures that are tailored to farmers’ needs. In Rwanda, a commitment by 2030 to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and to reduce food losses in farm production and along supply chains. In Sierra Leone, the implementation of the national flagship ‘Feed Salone’ strategy to drive local food production sustainably. These examples show what’s possible when countries take a ‘whole of government’ approach to food systems transformation. Think of the impact that could be unlocked if more countries signed up to putting food at the centre of their climate action. Deutsche Welle reports that "talks at the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan were deadlocked, two days before the talks wrap up. The sticking point is funding to help poor countries address the impacts of climate change. A new draft declaration has been released that includes two options - both suggesting around one trillion dollars per year. However, rich and developing countries remain far apart in terms of the exact amount needed and where it will come from." This video captures key reactions and insights from #COP29, including reflections from CGIAR's Aditi Mukherji on the current state of negotiations and their broader implications.
