🌍 The Mega Gas community kitchens remain a beacon of hope in low-income areas, providing thousands with access to clean and affordable cooking energy. While this mission is core to everything we do, we believe that Mega Gas is good for the Planet, for People, and for Profits. When it comes to profits, our projections show that the path to profitability lies in the sale of our 6kg gas cylinders for individual use. With 80,000 customers using 12.5 cylinders per year and purchasing gas at $4, we are set to make $3 million in profit within five years. To make this a reality, we are rolling out the Mega Gas 6kg cylinders and have partnered with a cylinder manufacturing company to ensure enough supply for our people. However, our commitment to serving the community is unwavering. We will continue expanding our community kitchens, as we believe this is the most impactful way to uplift low-income households. In the medium to long term, we plan to make the community kitchens the non-profit arm of Mega Gas, aimed at serving millions across Kenya. Here are my key takeaways from the Investment Guide during the Investor Cohort for #GreenFinancing by ANDE East Africa in Nairobi. There is a notable gap between the available investment instruments and the business models in the waste management sector in #Kenya. Investors typically target early or growth-stage businesses, offering ticket sizes between $50k and $500k through grants, debt, quasi-equity (convertible loans / equity), and de-risking instruments. However, these funding mechanisms don’t always align with the long-term, capital-intensive nature of waste management business models, which require additional support in R&D funding, machinery, infrastructure, and patient capital to scale effectively. According to KOIS, 115 businesses have been identified across eight waste management subsectors in Kenya, each with distinct business models: 1. #OrganicWaste Comprising 65% of waste, with over 5.7 million tons produced annually. Business models include food waste prevention, conversion of waste to organic fertilizers, biogas production, and the creation of proteins and animal feeds. Some of the companies include, Loop Pet Food and Taimba Limited and ORGANIC FIELDS 💯 2. #PlasticWaste Accounting for 10% of waste, with 888,000 tons generated annually. Business models include alternative packaging, recyclable materials, and construction from recycled plastic. Business models focus on water treatment and water efficiency support services. Learn more from Furies Enterprise 📌 Other subsectors include Textile Waste (1%), Biohazard Waste (1%), and Paper and Cardboard Waste (11%) and E-waste and others 9%. To bridge the funding gap, more investment in R&D, infrastructure, and patient capital is essential for businesses to fully develop and scale their waste management solutions.
