A declaration of commitment by African insurance industry leaders to support the achievement of the UN SDGs.
About us
The Declaration was formally launched at the UNEP PSI’s 4th Africa summit hosted by ICEA LION Group as a founding signatory in Nairobi in April 2021. Together with 11 other institutions, signatories to the Declaration sought to bring together senior leaders to accelerate solutions to major sustainability challenges – ranging from climate change and ecosystem degradation to poverty and social inequality - particularly in a post-Covid-19 world. Since its launch in 2021, FSD Africa has taken to supporting the Declaration through a series of events and thought leadership engagements as it encourages more institutions to sign up.

NDSI has been on a good growth momentum over the last 3 years, registering more than 200 signatories to become the 2nd largest African insurance industry association in the continent and making waves in mainstreaming sustainable insurance. This is important in building resilience for African businesses and communities. In the few years we have made significant strides in forming solid partner engagements that have set the foundation for the scale up of projects in the industry including working with the UNEP PSI and the African Development Bank. We are also providing an African Insurance voice to the development of an African ESG Taxonomy in conjunction with the AfDB as well as rolled out a Learning and Development programme for its members commencing with interactive webinars on ESG concepts, strategy development that will culminate in the development of an ESG roadmap for sector players. Financial services hold a vantage position in allocating and insuring capital. Thus, they are expected to play a lead role in enhancing sustainability across the investment landscape in #Africa. But how can the insurance sector mainstream sustainability more, how can it develop products that protect environment and nature? FSD Africa Risk and Resilience Manager Maria Karuru-Mwangi who was part of the team that recently organised a successful ESG Capacity Building Workshop together with the regulatory Insurance Regulatory Authority shares insights on the topic. -- FSD Africa, Zillah Malia, Titus Kisenga, Kaara Wainaina
