Intergovernmental Agreement based on regional cooperation towards cetacean conservation.

About us

The Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS) is a legal conservation tool based on cooperation. Its purpose is to reduce threats to cetaceans notably by improving current knowledge on these animals. This intergovernmental Agreement provides the demonstration of the commitment of riparian Countries to preserve all species of cetaceans and their habitats within the geographical Agreement area by the enforcement of more stringent measures than those defined in the texts adopted previously.

⚖️ In enclosed and semi-enclosed seas, the need to balance navigation with environmental protection becomes even more critical due to the higher risks involved.   Professor Tullio Scovazzi, ACCOBAMS legal advisor, addresses these challenges in his article in the Portuguese Yearbook of the Law of the Sea. He outlines key legal frameworks and strategies to ensure both global navigation and marine conservation can coexist effectively.   Read the article here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dTyrvJF5   #ACCOBAMS #LawOfTheSea #Conservation #MarineProtection

Did you know about Together for the Med? 🌱💙 Since 2017, the ACCOBAMS Secretariat is proud to be part of 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝—a dynamic partnership of 46 organizations dedicated to preserving the unique marine life of the Mediterranean Sea.   𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭? 🌊 The Mediterranean Sea covers less than 1% of the global ocean surface but is home to up to 18% of the world's marine species, with 25-30% found nowhere else on Earth! Yet, it's facing dramatic challenges: climate change (warming 20% faster than other regions), unsustainable fishing, invasive species, and the impact of over 300 million tourists each year. That's why we're taking action – and the answer to these regional (and global) threats can only be collective!   Since 2017, partners from Together for the Med have collaborated on 18 impactful projects to reduce anthropogenic pressure on marine biodiversity. Our current focus: 🔹 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 to achieve the 30x30 and 10x30 conservation goals, with effective and well-connected MPAs, HPAs and OECMs 🔹 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬, especially by reducing bycatch of vulnerable species, to safeguard marine biodiversity for future generations.   Want to join us on this journey? 🤝 Follow our new LinkedIn page: https://lnkd.in/dxdRrync 🌐 Visit our website: togetherforthemed.org 🤳Check out our Facebook posts: https://lnkd.in/dt_NVHZZ   Let's celebrate and protect our Mediterranean treasure—together! 💙 #togetherforthemed #MarineConservation #MediterraneanSea #SustainableFishing #MarineBiodiversity

Our collective efforts focus on protecting vulnerable species, enhancing marine ecosystems, and promoting sustainable fishing practices.   𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?   The Mediterranean Sea is a biodiversity hotspot, with up to 𝟭𝟴% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀, and 𝟮𝟱-𝟯𝟬% 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰. 🐠🌍 However, this unique region also concentrates significant challenges, including climate change, unsustainable fishing, invasive species, over-tourism, pollution and much more.   Through our joint actions, we strive to address these challenges and safeguard the Mediterranean's rich marine biodiversity for future generations.   To learn more about our work and how to engage with us, please visit our website: 👉 https://lnkd.in/evwFZnJx   #MarineConservation #MediterraneanDay #Biodiversity #Fishing #Pollution #Environment

Today, we celebrate the 28th anniversary of ACCOBAMS! 🎉   In the words of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, “All power is weak unless united.” This principle continues to guide our work as we unite efforts across borders to protect cetaceans and promote sustainable practices in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Atlantic regions.   Although much work still lies ahead, ACCOBAMS remains determined to push forward and create lasting impact for cetacean conservation.   #ACCOBAMS28 #Cetaceans #ConservationLeadership #MedSea #BlackSea #Atlantic #TogetherForCetaceans #CetaceanConservation
