🆕 🚨 Two new reports from Planet Tracker call on governments to support the precautionary principle on #DeepSeaMining. Planet Tracker's report "Race to the Bottom" analysed the economic benefits, tax and royalties that countries would receive if they sponsor mining and found that deep sea mining would generate little to no royalties and taxes for countries, on top of causing large-scale environmental damage. https://lnkd.in/eDHCaSRv The "Mining for Trouble" report found that deep-sea mining could have significant negative economic impacts on countries that export cobalt, copper, nickel and manganese. Many of the countries most at risk are lower income and more vulnerable and a significant proportion of national GDP is at risk. https://lnkd.in/dxjHKp63 📢 Both reports call for a moratorium position. #DefendTheDeep

We welcome the European Commission's confirmation of support for a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining. In response to a letter from 16 NGOs warning against the pro-deep-sea mining recommendations in the #Draghi report, the Commission reaffirmed its opposition to deep-sea mining. This is a significant step forward in the fight against deep-sea mining! 🦈🪼🐋🌊 Especially as Deep-sea mining is not necessary for a green transformation. Instead, we should focus on circular economy and innovative technologies. Gestern durfte ich als #Alumni stellvertretend für SHARKPROJECT am #Planetheroaward der Zurich Gruppe Deutschland teilnehmen. Eine äußerst hochwertige und interessante Veranstaltung mit einem grandiosen Finish durch die Preisverleihung! Danke für die Einladung!! Besonders spannend fand ich die Panel Diskussion mit unter anderem Dr. Katharina Reuter und den Vertretern der Zurich Leben und Zurich Katastropen Experten, die gemeinsam mit anderen Experten die Frage diskutierten, ob die Risiken, die durch die Klimakrise entstanden sind, überhaupt noch versicherbar sind. Ein sehr konstruktiver, aber auch kontroverser Austausch entstand, bei dem intensiv diskutiert wurde, ob wir ein strukturelles und systemisches Problem haben, bei dem wir Anreize für Versicherungsnehmende schaffen sollten, sich besser vorzubereiten, aber auch die Versicherungen gemeinsam einen Weg finden müssten, diejenigen zu belohnen, die sich um Besserung bemühen und diejenigen zur Rechenschaft ziehen sollten, die unsere Umwelt weiterhin mit Füßen treten. Ich hab wieder viel gelernt und noch mehr verstanden, dass wir Menschen positive Effekte suchen, die uns ein zukunftsorientiertes Handeln attraktiver machen. Na dann begeben wir uns doch mal und die Suche..

Maus-Türöffner-Tag 2024 – Wir waren dabei! ✨ Am 3. Oktober war es wieder soweit: Beim „Türen-auf-mit-der-Maus-Tag“ ermöglichte unsere Partnerorganisation SHARKPROJECT über 100 Kindern ein unvergessliches Hai-Schnuppertauch-Erlebnis im Hallenbad in Langen. 🤿🐋 Neben spannenden Einblicken in den Meeres- und Haischutz konnten die Kinder auch an unserem Kinder-Aktionswettbewerb teilnehmen. 🎨🌍 Mit jeder Menge Kreativität setzten sie das neu gewonnene Wissen in selbst gestaltete Kunstwerke um. Ein großes Dankeschön an das Team von SHARKPROJECT für die tolle Zusammenarbeit und an alle Kinder für ihre kreativen Beiträge! 💙 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mach auch du mit! Noch bis zum 1. November können Kids im Alter von 5-12 Jahren ihre Kunstwerke einreichen. 🎨 🖌 Am 14. November werden dann die 4 Gewinner:innen in den Altersgruppen gekürt. Our team member, Pamela Nylund, is in Brussels this week for #EUOceanWeek, where we are standing alongside 140 organizations calling for bold, transformative action to protect our oceans. 🌍 With pressing challenges ahead, we’re urging the newly elected European Parliament and incoming Commissioners to commit to an #Ocean Fund and introduce legislation that bans destructive activities at sea. These steps are critical to prevent our oceans and coastlines from reaching a breaking point. 🐋🌊 We’re also proud to support the launch of the #BlueManifesto, advocating for an ambitious #OceanDeal that places ocean health at the heart of EU decision-making. Here it is! We are so pleased to introduce you to our new boat AD ASTRA 😍 It’s a dream coming true, allowing us to have our independence, train our team and students, welcome partners and visitors, facilitate trips at sea for our environmental education program and continue to collect important scientific data on whale sharks for conservation. We are also now able to take you out for a day of science ! AD ASTRA is a 9.8 motor boat fully equipped for research. This couldn’t be possible without the support of Matechmad who are lending us a Suzuki DF200 A engine, Tropical Boat for building the hull locally in Madagascar and their support, and last not but least our partner SHARKPROJECT possible ! Thanks to Julie from for the beautiful typography. For those who didn’t get the hint… AD ASTRA means “towards the stars” as in Madagascar, whale sharks are known as the “many stars”.🌟

Today, 16 #NGOs have sent a letter to President Ursula von der Leyen to express their serious concerns about a recommendation in the recently published #MarioDraghi report on the Future of European Competitiveness that the EU should "carefully explore the potential of environmentally-sustainable deep sea mining." In this part of the report, the #EUcommission is ill-advised: Deep-sea mining will not help us tackle the #ClimateCrisis, it will eventually exacerbate it. Also nothing about #DeepSeaMining is "environmentally-sustainable". Alternatives to #DeepSeaMining exist.
