Panel 3 at YEF 2024, titled "Data, the New Oil. AI, the New Electricity," examined how data and artificial intelligence (AI) are driving Malaysia’s digital transformation and reshaping the economy. The panellists emphasised that data is the raw material powering digital innovation, akin to oil’s role in the industrial revolution, while AI functions as the new electricity, fueling advancements across multiple sectors. This transformative combination is central to Malaysia’s strategy for building a resilient, tech-driven economy. Speakers discussed the National AI Roadmap and Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint, which outline a structured approach for embedding AI in sectors like healthcare, finance, and public services. By aligning with global tech trends, Malaysia aims to create high-value jobs, foster innovation, and attract foreign investment. Tan Sri Syed Zainal of Dagang NeXchange Berhad (“DNeX”) highlighted AI’s predictive power and data management efficiencies in the semiconductor industry, while Hann Yeoh of YTL Power International discussed AI’s role in renewable energy management. In discussing corporate adaptation to AI, Shankar Kanabiran of EY noted that 75% of Malaysian companies plan to implement AI within the next year, driven by the need for efficiency and strategic growth. The panel agreed that while AI transforms industries, it enhances rather than replaces human roles, with Kanabiran emphasising that human oversight is vital in maintaining ethical and effective AI systems. The panelists stressed the importance of balanced investments in AI platforms and human resources to achieve sustainable growth Moderated by Ellina Roslan of MyCentre 4IR, The session underscored that data and AI are not just technological tools but pivotal elements in building a sustainable, inclusive future where Malaysia can lead in eco-friendly innovation and digital development

A month has passed since our biggest Youth Economic Forum to date with over 1,300+ delegates! This year, the YEF theme “A Second Economic Takeoff: Malaysia’s Path to the New Economy” highlights three key pillars shaping the future: the Digital Economy, the Green Economy, and Talent. Malaysia has the potential to lead in the digital space, with global tech investments creating opportunities for job growth and a thriving digital landscape. Sustainability is at the heart of the Green Economy, with initiatives like National Energy Transition Roadmap positioning Malaysia to lead in sustainable development, offering new industries and green jobs. However, the success of these transformations depends on youth talent. Skilled individuals are crucial in turning these roadmaps into real economic growth, driving Malaysia’s future prosperity. As our YEF director, Ewanina rightly said, "'Pemuda harapan bangsa, pemudi tiang negara' – I believe our country’s future is in our hands. Us youth have a big role to play in building a Malaysia that’s sustainable, inclusive, and ready to face tomorrow’s challenges." This sentiment echoes the crucial role we, as youth, have in shaping Malaysia’s economic future. We also echo the words of PFAA President, Syed "We, the youth today, need to change. The only constant is change. For us to be relevant in these new economic sectors, continuous learning is critical; upskilling and reskilling are necessary, but most importantly, dedication and commitment are non-negotiable." Reflecting on the event, we are filled with gratitude for everyone who contributed to its success. From our inspiring speakers who shared their insights and expertise, to the engaged participants who brought fresh ideas and enthusiasm, and the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes—you all played a vital role in making this event memorable. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, whose generous support made it all possible. Tan Sri (Sir) Francis Yeoh, Executive Chairman of YTL Corporation Bhd, recently met with the Vietnam Communist Party General Secretary To Lam. The General Secretary received leaders of several major Malaysian groups during his official visit to Malaysia to acknowledge and appreciate the businesses’ support for and contributions to economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia, considering this as a highlight and a key factor ensuring the sustainable and substantive development of bilateral relationship, bringing practical benefits to the two nations' people. Tan Sri Francis' discussion with the Secretary General was on YTL's collaboration with US-based NVIDIA Corporation to build a large data centre in Johor, Malaysia. He expressed his confidence in Vietnam's clean energy development trend and digital transformation, and his desire to build a data centre in the country. The Secretary General in turn appreciated YTL's vision and technological capabilities in capturing development trends, especially in the field of AI infrastructure and emerging technologies. He showed his belief that YTL will be an important partner in driving digital transformation and modernising infrastructure in Vietnam. Source: https://lnkd.in/gmyKAfAn

  • World Fears a Wider Trade War. Malaysia Sees an Opportunity. Malaysia has so far secured billions of dollars from American companies, including NVIDIA, Microsoft and Google, to build in the economic zone. It has also wooed Chinese companies like ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok. A 15-minute drive away, another dusty construction site looked out of place surrounded by palm trees. It’s the location of a large Nvidia data center that is part of a $4.3 billion partnership with YTL Power International, an energy subsidiary of one of Malaysia’s biggest conglomerates. Workers driving heavy trucks deep into a palm plantation used a different road — sturdier so it could bear the weight. Many of the targets for the special economic zone are focused on improving the flow of people on the border between Singapore and Johor, so that companies and workers in Singapore have a cheaper option to live and operate. Like their counterparts around the world, Malaysian officials are just beginning to digest the re-election of Mr. Trump. Some have started to float another idea: that Malaysia diversify beyond China and the United States. “The world may enter into a situation where there may be a U.S. supply chain and a China supply chain,” said Chin Tong Liew, Malaysia’s deputy minister of investment, trade and industry. “Then the rest is up for grabs. There will be a middle ground, and the more resilient our supply chain is the better.” Source: The New York Times Full Article: https://lnkd.in/gN-eGUEz

  • Data centre investment on course, says YTL Power International In his first media interview since the announcement of the US$4.3 billion data centre in December 2023, YTL Power managing director Datuk Seri Yeoh Seok Hong dismisses any uncertainty surrounding its partnership with NVIDIA Corp in the project. “Don’t talk about rumours … Prove us otherwise. Then we will have something to comment on. In essence, we are doing a very serious programme. “Go back to those announcements with Nvidia together with us, which we have made publicly [in December and March]. If we say something, we mean it. If not, we don’t say it. We believe in the AI future,” he stresses. Information on YTL’s website shows that its data centre venture comprises co-location (the renting out of space to other companies based on take-up capacity) and providing AI cloud computing to data centre customers. Despite market rumours surrounding the data centre project, analysts have largely kept their bullish target prices (TPs) intact. Of the 14 analysts covering the firm, their TPs range between RM4 and RM7.45, with an average of RM5.64. All but one have “buy” calls on the stock, with JPMorgan having a “neutral” call at RM4. The counter closed at RM3.20 last Friday. “At the present price, the market has heavily discounted the data centre valuation from YTL Power, which presents an opportunity to accumulate an AI/Nvidia proxy at 8-9 times FY2026 PE (price-earnings forecast for FY ending June 30, 2026),” says Kenanga Investors Berhad Research’s head of research Peter Kong. The research house has a TP of RM5.20. “If people want to speculate or bet against you … the market is the market,” says Yeoh. “The important thing is [there is] no distraction. What is important is, are we in the right industry, and whether we are getting the right returns.” Source: The Edge Malaysia Full Article: https://lnkd.in/gZEvVi29
