Hyphen signs MoU to bridge skills gap in green hydrogen sector HYPHEN Hydrogen Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hardap Regional Council to address the skills gap and prepare local talent for opportunities in the green hydrogen industry. The partnership, part of Hyphen’s broader collaboration with the Namibian government, aims to roll out specialized training and capacity-building initiatives. Initially targeting the Hardap Region, the program will later expand to the //ǁKaras// Region, fostering local expertise to meet industry labor demands. Head of Environment and Social Governance at Hyphen, Toni J E Beukes Cert.Dir., underscored the importance of equipping local talent for the emerging industry. https://lnkd.in/dEGach4j #namibia #greenhydrogen #skills #opportunities #economy James Mnyupe Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme African Hydrogen Partnership (AHP) Global African Hydrogen Summit Ministry of Mines and Energy Namibia (MME) Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) Penda Ithindi NamGHA . Hyphen has taken another significant step in collaborating with the Government of Namibia, represented by the Hardap Regional Council, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to develop local skills and capacity building. Vice-Chairperson of the Nama Traditional Leaders Association Gaob David Hanse and Executive Director of the Ministry of Mines and Energy Penda Ithindi joined the Hardap Regional Council and Hyphen at a signing ceremony this week. The agreement is crucial in driving economic growth, and expanding education and training opportunities for local people by upskilling Namibians. Toni Beukes, Hyphen's head of environment, social and governance, said: "Our goal is to ensure that local talent is well-equipped to seize the opportunities emerging from implementing the Hyphen project." https://lnkd.in/e-Nw8BZ2 #Hyphen #GreenHydrogen #Hydrogen #RenewableEnergy #Namibia #Africa #Training #Skills

Green hydrogen is a game-changer, but for many, it’s still a concept wrapped in uncertainty. What does it really mean for Namibia? For Africa? For you? I had the privilege of sitting down with Musheko Jona, the Lead External Affairs and Communications Manager at the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, to separate fact from fiction and explore the real impact of this emerging industry. We discussed: ✅ Is green hydrogen in Namibia just one big project or the start of an industry? ✅ Are Namibians ready for the sector, and how can we get involved? ✅ The surprising connections between green hydrogen, agriculture, energy, and economic growth. Beyond that, Musheko is widely recognized as one of Namibia’s top spokespersons, a true master of communication. In this episode, he also shares valuable lessons on what it takes to be an effective communicator in today’s fast-moving world. A huge thank you to Jona MUSHEKO for always being accessible, insightful, and committed to keeping the public informed. Your transparency and passion for sharing knowledge are truly inspiring! Here is my appreciation of Namibia’s efforts toward the gazetting/publication of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat Provisional Schedule of Tariff Concessions, viewed through the green hydrogen lens. A few days ago, Green Metals Refinery Namibia (GMRN) announced plans to establish a manganese and sulphuric acid production facility in #Namibia to supply materials for #electric #vehicle batteries. They stated that they will procure high-quality manganese ore from existing mines in South Africa (Namibian Sun, 18 Feb 2025). That alone highlights the significance of the Free Trade Agreement moving forward. Interestingly, GMRN also cited Namibia’s ability to produce #renewable energy competitively, supported by the government’s vision to become a bulk exporter of #green #hydrogen, as a key factor in their location decision. This effectively could integrate green industrialization into #free trade. According to our (🇳🇦) Green Hydrogen Blueprint (GHB) (page 19, read together with page 16), Namibia envisions producing clean energy for export to neighboring countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, not only to advance industrialization but also to contribute to global #decarbonization efforts. More tangibly, and in a practical demonstration of regional integration, one of Namibia’s green hydrogen projects- HyIron , set to commence production in the coming days, will source part of its iron ore from South Africa (and some in 🇳🇦) to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). That is “Exhibit B”. Moving to “Exhibit C”, and once again referencing the GHB (page 19), Namibia has the potential to host industries that recognize the growing demand for green products, particularly in Africa (for example, South Africa’s Climate Change Act, No. 22 of 2024) and Europe (through policies like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)). These industries could focus on key minerals such as manganese, iron ore, platinum, and copper, strengthening Namibia’s role in green industrialization. To conclude, the AfCFTA holds significant potential to drive a collective, diversified industrialization strategy for Africa.
