G.A.S. Foundation is thrilled to welcome Bisila Noha, our first resident of the year. A ceramic artist, researcher, and writer based in London, Bisila’s practice explores the intersections of heritage, craft, and community. Through her work, she seeks to challenge Western perspectives on art and craft, using ceramics as a medium to question societal notions of productivity, value, and tradition. Her practice spans wheel-thrown pieces to sculptural works that blend throwing, coiling, and carving which connects her to her roots, and our collective past. "I would love to use my time at G.A.S. to improve my skills by having uninterrupted time to create, which feels like an incredible luxury. I hope to spend time working alongside the local potters near the Farm. This will be a fantastic opportunity not only to learn new skills and gain insights into their history but also to connect on a human level." 🔗 Read more in the following link: https://lnkd.in/eAgdfgDD This residency is generously supported by kó Art Space. #gasfoundation #gasfellowship #averyyoungblood #artistinresidency #traditionalart #research #culturalexchange #residencyprogram #gaslibrary #gasfarm #archives #history #community #pottery Image credits: 1. About us
Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation is a Nigerian non-profit founded in 2019 by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA and an esteemed board of Directors. It delivers residency and public programmes across two sites located in Lagos and Ijebu. The multi-use live/work spaces host multidisciplinary artists, researchers and curators from all over the world in awarded residencies for up to three months. In Lagos, the Foundation is hosted in an award-winning building designed by Elsie Owusu in collaboration with Nihinlola Shonibare. The secondary location designed by Papa Omotayo sits on a 54-acre working farm owned by Shonibare located on the outskirts of Ikise, a village neighbouring Ijebu-Ode. The farm produces crops ranging from yams and cassava to peppers and cashew. The Foundation’s mission is underpinned by an ethos that strives to create a platform for creative and career development and knowledge exchange. Through the support of international partnerships, G.A.S. hopes to break down traditional barriers of privilege, wealth and lack of infrastructure and provide opportunities for both its residents and the local community.

Throwback to Primitive Hypertext, an inspiring presentation and printing workshop by then-resident Avery Youngblood at G.A.S. Lagos! During this event, Avery introduced participants to the Riso printing machine, known for its bold, textured prints and screen-printing-like process. Following this, Avery delved into her residency research on how obsolete technologies shape modern creativity. Central to the discussion was 'primitive hypertext,' a concept inspired by Octavia E. Butler’s exploration of interconnected thinking, memory, and storytelling. Attendees reflected on how these ideas challenge and expand our understanding of creativity, history, and identity. The evening concluded with a hands-on workshop, where participants transformed these concepts into unique prints, exploring creativity, technology, and storytelling. 🔗 Read more via the following link: https://lnkd.in/gBNuVCCh #gasfoundation #gasfellowship #artistresidency #averyyoungblood #research #residencyprogram #printing #storytellingworkshop #archives #octaviabutler #identityandtechnology #primitivehypertext @yaleschoolofart

To conclude her residency at G.A.S. Lagos, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye hosted an intimate dinner and film screening of Black Girl, a 1966 French-Senegalese drama written and directed by Ousmane Sembène. Adapted from a short story in Sembène’s 1962 collection Voltaique, the film tells the story of Diouana, a young Senegalese woman who moves from Dakar to France to work as a nanny for a wealthy family. Her aspirations for a cosmopolitan life are crushed as she is confined to the role of a domestic servant, enduring mistreatment from her employers. During the evening, Mobolaji reflected on her residency, highlighting how her research in the G.A.S. Library and Picton Archive enriched her exploration of distortion and layering in her art. She also discussed her focus on female experiences, using Black Girl to highlight the struggles of African women. The screening was followed by a rich discussion on identity, colonialism, and the African diaspora, leaving attendees with reflections on the film’s relevance today. 🔗 Read more via the following link: https://lnkd.in/enPdQC9b #gasfoundation #gasfellowship #artistresidency #mobolajiogunrosoye #artistinresidency #ousmanesembene #research #culturalexchange #blackgirl #collage #gaslibrary #archives #history

🎨 In October, Lagos’ vibrant art season was in full swing, and Art X Lagos stood out as one of its keystone events. As a proud residency partner, G.A.S. Foundation was delighted to host Shabu Mwangi, recipient of the Access ART X Diaspora Prize. Shabu’s residency with us wrapped up this November, marking a meaningful chapter in his creative journey. During the fair, Shabu presented Fortune and Power, a powerful exhibition that explored systemic oppression, governance, and the interplay between tradition and modernity in African societies. Inspired by his community in Nairobi’s Mukuru Slum and his time in Lagos and Ijebu-Ode, Shabu’s work featured six figurative oil paintings and an installation evoking the Zangbeto masquerade—a symbol of law, order, and traditional values. ____ Shabu Mwangi, Access ART X Prize: What May Come 2024 Exhibition. This December, we are thrilled to host our final resident of the year, Nigerian multidisciplinary artist Mobolaji Ogunrosoye, as she undertakes a two-week research fellowship at G.A.S. Lagos. Known for a distinct visual language that intersects photography and collage, Mobolaji's practice critically delves into themes of selfhood, body image, and the societal forces that shape identity in West African women both on the continent and in the diaspora. “I’ve been in discussions with G.A.S. about accessing their library and archives for some time now. This residency offers a unique opportunity to immerse myself in a rich repository of materials, which will significantly support my collage practice. By building a personal archive of images, I will be better equipped to expand the conceptual and material possibilities within my work.” 🔗 Read more in the following link: https://lnkd.in/ejMwx-SF All images courtesy of the Artist. #gasfoundation #gasfellowship #artistresidency #mobolajiogunrosoye #artistinresidency #photography #research #culturalexchange #residencyprogram #collage #gaslibrary #archives #history
