We are delighted to share that our trading and nomination platform, #Empire, is a finalist at the Utility Week #Awards 2024, in the Digital Transformation Category. This year’s Utility Week Awards have been the most competitive ever, with judges whittling down a record 325 entries across 16 categories. Members of the BritNed team are looking forward to attending the awards ceremony in London at the beginning of December to celebrate this recognition. Supercharge #platform #energy

BritNed is pleased to announce the introduction of its first Annual +2 Auction product. The inaugural #auction ran on 10 - 11 October 2024, offering 50MW of annual 2026 capacity in the GB-NL direction. Commenting following the publication of the final auction results, Jonathan Cole, Customer and Markets Manager at BritNed, said: “We are delighted to offer another auction product to our customers, helping to provide even greater choice and flexibility in their trading activity. We saw high participation in this initial auction, demonstrating that as per our research, this is something our customers wanted and needed, as the energy landscape continues to evolve at pace. “Our new Annual +2 Auction sits alongside our seven other capacity auctions within our portfolio, including the two new auctions we launched earlier this year. In April, we launched the unique Buy Now auction, which is the first Dutch-style interconnector auction of its kind, and in May we launched the first Weekly Auctions for a GB #interconnector. “Alongside the rest of our auction portfolio, the Annual +2 Auction was held in our trading and nomination platform, Empire. With its cutting-edge technology, Empire enables us to respond to market needs at pace and release new auction types as required by the market. We will continue to deliver innovations and new trading possibilities to our participants, with more scheduled for 2025, so watch this space.”

On Monday, NESO issued a GB Capacity Market Notice (CMN), the first issued in almost 2 years. Following the closure of the #DayAhead nomination gate, flows were expected from GB to NL, in line with market prices. However, our customers responded to within-day #market price signals and auctions run by NESO, subsequently changing nominated flows from NL to GB by >6GW over a 4-hour period. This example highlights the high level of #flexibility we provide our customers and the market. #interconnector #energy

🤝 BritNed is part of a coalition of 20 European #energy associations and transmission system operators which have sent a letter to the North Seas Energy Ministers calling upon them to prioritise a more efficient #electricity trade between the UK and EU. 🌍 The current situation is deemed unfit for the future, and investors are reluctant to commit without efficient mechanisms in place. As a result, Europe is missing out on investment opportunities to fully develop offshore wind projects in the North Seas while we should, in fact, be aiming towards a European energy system that is more independent, sustainable, and resilient. 💸 Therefore, introducing a price coupling mechanism between the GB and EU electricity markets will contribute towards, not only affordable energy for industry and households, but also to securing decarbonisation before 2050. 📆 All signatories call upon the North Seas Energy Ministers to discuss the proposed solution during their upcoming meeting on 24 October in Odense, Denmark. #KeepTheLightsOn #TransmissionSystemOperators Elia Group

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting Lawrence Slade, FEI and Dan Clelland from the Energy Networks Association (ENA) at our UK converter station on the Isle of Grain. Team provided a full tour of the site including the control room, explaining how the #interconnector operates, our #assetmanagement and resilience initiatives, as well as discussing BritNed’s excellent availability and reliability record over the past 13 years. Following the tour, Lawrence commented: “It was fantastic to see the physical 260km cable that brings power to the UK and to see where the “magic happens” to send it to the UK grid. Our interconnectors provide a vital service to the UK and our European neighbours, which is taken extremely seriously by the dedicated team at BritNed. The visit really illustrated the real pride in the safe and efficient operation of the interconnector exercised by the teams involved - now for well over a decade.” Thanks for visiting us Lawrence and Dan! #energy #electricity

As an international team which works across different countries which are separated by the North Sea, it’s important we get together occasionally to collaborate, share ideas, and have #fun away from work. Recently, the BritNed team gathered at our office in the Netherlands, inside TenneT headquarters, for a series for departmental updates as we analyse 2024 and begin to look forward to 2025. Afterwards, we headed to for a series of fun activities, including archery, crossbows and driving remote control 4x4s - all much harder than they initially seemed!

We’d like to thank all of our customers who attended our annual London Participants Forum last week. We reviewed the past 12 months which saw the release of our nomination and trading platform #Empire, the unique Buy Now and Weekly Auctions, and we looked forward to a busy 2025 which will bring more #innovations as we continue on our mission to offer our participants the greatest #choice, convenience and #control in their #interconnector trading activity.  This year was also a little different to previous years as we also celebrated the first birthday of Empire, which was launched on 19 September 2023, with some delicious custom cupcakes. We'd also like to thank our guest speakers, Dan Clelland from Energy Networks Association (ENA) and Stephen Woodhouse from AFRY, for delivering such insightful and interesting presentations on how the recent general election in the UK could change policy, and the impact of EU #CBAM for interconnectors. We now look forward to our Participants Forum in Denmark which takes place in Aarhus next week.
