Emergency incidents vary across each region, therefore there is a need to be ahead of such emergencies that may one day occur by being equipped with the relavant and latest information and knowledge on incident management. Kudos to the Singapore Civil Defence Force officers for their efforts in furthering their emergency and disaster management knowledge and skillsets.
Frontline responders who keep the people of Singapore safe on a daily basis have been honing their skills with Coventry University Group. Two officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) have graduated from the university’s Master’s degree in #EmergencyManagement which has helped prepare them for a variety of potential disasters or events. Taught by staff with a diverse array of backgrounds – both academic and practitioner - the course covers a range of topics within the field of emergency preparedness, response, risk mitigation, recovery and resilience. Learners who are new to the field, as well as those currently working in the sector, are provided with the knowledge and skills needed to analyse approaches, identify good practice and facilitate change for the better. Daniel Ng, who received a scholarship from the Ministry of Home Affairs Singapore, chose the course to elevate his leadership skills and prepare him for greater responsibilities, which aligned perfectly with his aspirations within SCDF. He said: "The Master’s in Emergency and Disaster Management at Coventry University was an incredibly enriching experience. The programme equipped me with advanced leadership skills. What I valued most was how theoretical concepts were applied to real-world scenarios. "I was particularly drawn to Coventry University because of its strong reputation in this field and the opportunity it provided to engage with leading experts and cutting-edge research." Amelia Justina Lim is a Senior Assistant Director in SCDF’s Emergency Medical services department who was the commander of one of the fire stations in Singapore when she started the course. She received a scholarship from Coventry University and decided it would be beneficial to train from a more academic point of view. Amelia said: "Some of my assignments involved looking at major UK incidents such as the Grenfell Fire or the Manchester arena attack. So, I got to really look in-depth into how those incidents were managed and learned from them, which was really interesting, as well as learning the theory behind the decision-making on the ground which was fascinating."
