Inspiring day with great examples and important take-aways towards shaping Europe’s future even stronger
Today, I had the privilege of opening the workshop 'Shaping Europe’s future: Knowledge Valorisation of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSAH) for societal impact and human-centred innovation', co-organised with the Universities Denmark. This vibrant event highlights the growing recognition that SSAH disciplines play a pivotal in addressing global challenges. Research in these fields provides essential insights that complement other innovations, enabling sustainable solutions and driving societal progress. Building on the EU’s Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation, we now have a framework to translate research results into tangible benefits. With Codes of Practice on intellectual asset management, standardisation, co-creation, and citizen engagement already in place, we are working towards a multidisciplinary collaboration that integrates SSAH disciplines better into the innovation landscape. President Ursula von der Leyen’s vision for a European Research Area Act, anchored in the “fifth freedom” of free movement of researchers, knowledge, and technology, aligns perfectly with this goal. Reports by Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta emphasize the importance of breaking down silos and fostering cross-border, cross-disciplinary collaborations to unlock Europe’s full potential. At the workshop, participants explore inspiring case studies and exchanged best practices on creating societal value from SSAH research. The insights will culminate in an outcome paper, providing a foundation for future policies and practices. This conversation is only the beginning. By bridging disciplines, fostering innovation, and amplifying the impact of SSAH research, we can shape a more inclusive and sustainable future for Europe. Thank you to all the participants, speakers, and co-organisers for making this event a success!
