Our research group (PI: Prof. Dr. Paul de Vos) explores immune-endocrine interactions in disorders like inflammatory bowel disease, alongside investigating nutritional influences on gut immunity and strategies for preventing cell transplant rejection. Our main lines of research: - Nutritional immunology: Exploring how specific food components can influence the immune barrier of the gastrointestinal tract - Immunology of cell transplants: Researching what causes the strong rejection of cellular grafts of islets of Langerhans and how this can be prevented with encapsulation Dept. Conventional and novel prebiotics are deeply related and entangled with gut health, microbiota balance, and immune modulation. Alongside the experts Paul de Vos and João Paulo Fabi, we explored the present literature on the matter, with a special focus on the available data derived from clinical trials, as well as direct modulation of immune cells and receptors by those prebiotic molecules. 🎉 A Remarkable Month for our Immunoendocrinology Team! 🎉 We are incredibly proud of our team's achievements this month. Not one, not two, but three high-impact publications came out of our collective efforts. Highlights from this month: Renate Akkerman, in collaboration with the team of Marthe Walvoort published: Exopolysaccharides from Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis and Bifidobacterium adolescentis modulate Toll-like receptor signaling. This study, published in Carbohydrate Polymers, demonstrates how exopolysaccharides from Bifidobacteria have species-specific effects on immunity, positioning them as key effector molecules of these health-regulating gut microbes. Luis Silva Lagos, alongside with Henk Schols, Cynthia Klostermann and Gabriel Lopez, authored: Immunostimulatory effects of isomalto/malto-polysaccharides via TLR2 and TLR4 in preventing doxycycline-induced cytokine loss. Also published in Carbohydrate Polymers, this study highlights the potential of IMMP to counteract the immune-dampening effects of antibiotics like Doxycycline, advancing the fight against antibiotic overuse and resilience after antibiotic use. Paul de Vos, together with the ILSI Europe team, published: Prebiotics in food and dietary supplements: a roadmap to EU health claims. This impactful paper, featured in Gut Microbes, provides a comprehensive roadmap for leveraging prebiotics in food and supplements to support EU health claims. A few weeks ago, our Immunoendocrinology Group had the pleasure of receiving the visit of Dr. Lucimara Mach Cortes Cordeiro from the Universidade Federal do Paraná (Curitiba, Brazil). Dr. Cortes Cordeiro's research is focus on carbohydrate chemistry, with a particular focus on the structural elucidation and biological activity of complex polysaccharides—prebiotics, dietary carbohydrates, and dietary fibers—found in tropical fruits and foods. 🌱🍍 This visit was a fantastic opportunity to connect with another expert in the functional foods field, discussing about exciting collaborations on the health-enhancing effects of complex carbohydrate structures. I am extremely happy to announce that our new article "Immunostimulatory effects of isomalto/malto-polysaccharides via TLR2 and TLR4 in preventing doxycycline-induced cytokine loss" has been published in #CarbohydratePolymers (IF 10.7). This study reveals how isomalto/malto-polysaccharides (IMMPs)—prebiotic α-glucans commonly used as food ingredients—go beyond their dietary benefits to exert direct immunostimulatory effects by engaging TLR2 and TLR4. We found that: ✅ IMMPs activate TLR2 and TLR4, leading to a significant increase in NF-κB signaling. ✅ Enhanced cytokine production, including IL-8, TNFα, and IL1-RA, in immune cells. ✅ IMMPs help mitigate the immune-attenuating effects of doxycycline, an antibiotic that can paradoxically impair immune function. ✅ Molecular docking analysis supports IMMPs' direct interaction with TLRs, highlighting their therapeutic potential. 🎉 Exciting News! 🎉 We are thrilled to share the latest publication from our group on the development of pectin-based beads as a potential encapsulation material to protect L. plantarum WCFS1 during its passage through the gastrointestinal tract! 🧬🍋 The study, using pectin isolated from lemon with two degrees of methylation (DM18 and DM88), successfully created microbeads in combination with alginate or chitosan, demonstrating promising results for maintaining bacterial viability and protecting intestinal epithelial barrier function. **What a night!** 🎉 🚩Last night was an incredible experience with Nadine Kool from ISPT - Institute for Sustainable Process Technology and prof. Paul de Vos and Luis Silva Lagos from Immunoendocrinology group UMCG at the Nacht van de Onderzoekers (Night of the Researcher) at the Forum Groningen with over 2000 attendees! We could proudly showcase the Fascinating program. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with an enthusiastic audience who had so many insightful questions. ⭐️The star of the night? Our #eiwittbal made from fava bean protein, potato, and pumpkin seeds, containing 30% plant-based proteins with a full amino acid profile and all materials produced from Groningen’s rich soil! These treats were such a hit, they ran out faster than we expected! 🔬As scientists, we thrive on this kind of energy! It was inspiring to see a huge interest in healthy, sustainable, and local food from an audience of all ages and backgrounds.
