Dear colleagues and friends, Thanks to you, 2024 was a year shaped by collaboration, curiosity, and progress within our teaching and learning community. Together, we tackled important challenges, shared expertise, and explored new ways to enhance education at Maastricht University. 🔄This year, EDLAB supported initiatives like the TutorKit and the Student Guidance projects, won a substantial Npuls grant and facilitated opportunities for educators to exchange ideas and innovate. These efforts have strengthened our collective commitment to improving education for students and staff alike. 💡In the year ahead, we aim to build on this foundation with fresh ideas, collaborative projects, and continued support for educators. From advancing Problem-Based Learning practices to stimulating new research in teaching, EDLAB will remain a hub for educational innovation and community engagement at Maastricht University. Thank you for contributing your ideas, energy, and expertise to EDLAB. Your involvement gives meaning to our work and inspires us to keep pushing boundaries in education. Wishing you a restful holiday season and a fulfilling, rewarding 2025, The EDLAB team

Congratulations Martijn on all these impressive achievements on so many fronts! It is very gratifying to learn about everything you have accomplished thanks to the initial education research grant. It sounds like the journey is still ongoing, with many new projects and ideas ahead!
Two years ago, we received an EDLAB Learning & Innovation grant to improve Multivariable Calculus education for the BSc Circular Engineering (CE) and the BSc Business Engineering (BE) at Maastricht University. Today, I'm happy to share the project's final outcomes and celebrate how relatively small seed grants can lead to big outcomes! 🥳 🎯 Learning materials: Together with Thijs Vogely, we developed a question bank in Canvas consisting of 500+ randomized, parametrized, and diversified questions that can be used to create online quizzes for Multivariable Calculus. The question banks can be accessed by all UM staff to enhance their courses with both practice and graded quizzes. Just reach out! 📚 Publication: We also researched the impact of our practice and graded quiz system for Multivariable Calculus on student performance which was recently published. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eRtJHWQz! I'm very proud of this paper as it marks my first step into the world of educational research, which I couldn't have done without the help of Laurie Delnoij and Stefan Jongen! 📽️ Dissemination: With this project we also wanted to showcase our work to a broader audience, which lead to this amazing video that we made with Rob Zink: https://lnkd.in/eupzUkEG. Thanks to all the students that volunteered for this video! 🤝 Collaborations: We further strengthened the ties between the Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, enriching both the BE and CE programs! I hope to continue such collaborations with program directors Gavin Phillips and Carla Koopman! ✨ Ripple effects: This project indirectly led to the formation of the Computing Sciences Education (CSE) research area group at the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS). As first coordinator of this group, I hope we can enable more new ideas, better grant proposals (more on that later! 😉) and interdisciplinary collaborations. The project proves, yet again, that even small funding initiatives can lead to significant outcomes, not just for research but also for education innovation. A heartfelt thanks to EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning for making this possible! 👍 #educationinnovation #educationresearch #assessment #mathematics #maastrichtuniversity

🎉 Exciting Announcement 🎉 I am thrilled to share that I have been selected for the PREMIUM Excellence Programme Maastricht University! This honours programme is designed for motivated and high-performing master's students, offering a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academic study and career development. Starting in January, I look forward to gaining valuable insights, working alongside talented peers, and participating in a challenging project! It will definitely be demanding as I will be participating in the honors programme while pursuing a full-time internship in Cambridge. However, I am always up for a good challenge! Thank you to the team at Maastricht University and EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning for this incredible opportunity. I can't wait to get started! #PREMIUMExcellence #MaastrichtUniversity #HonoursProgramme #CareerDevelopment #MasterStudent #NewBeginnings #ExcitedForTheFuture Photo: https://lnkd.in/ervRJTYb

I really enjoyed this engaging workshop recently attended at EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning looking at how we can revise our course design to enhance student's learning, engagement and motivation in our courses. It's always inspiring to attend CPD (continuous professional development) sessions, add more tools to the educational toolbox and learn from other facilitators 🧰💡

Through hands-on activities and discussions, they discovered practical tools and new ideas to improve their course design and teaching materials. 👉🏻Led by Dominique Meyers and Eveline Persoon from EDLAB, the session focused on how to bring motivation theories into practice. 📣𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽: 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 & 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 🗓️ 20 January 2025 ⏰ 13:30-15:30 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d-tR6NZ The study period is, for many students, a stressful period. Stress and anxiety can be normal and even functional. But as a staff member, it can be of utmost importance to know about the signs of dysfunctional or unhealthy stress and anxiety. In this workshop, you’ll get tools to deal with this, even more, to help prevent severe anxiety problems. Academic staff close to the students can have a significant impact on the well-being of students. Join our upcoming workshop to learn how to help students struggling with stress and anxiety! #education #teaching #learning #EDLAB

This week, together with Dominique Meyers from EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning, the DEXLab team —including David Grigorjan, Jonas Heller 🟥 , and Andrea Ferruzza—held a hands-on workshop on storytelling. Organized through UMIO | Maastricht University for our Maastricht University controllers, the event explored the power and techniques of storytelling and how VR can redefine the way we share and experience stories. All 34 participants tried out the Meta Quest 3 headset and experienced VR for themselves. It was great to see their reactions as they stepped into the Anne Frank House in VR and felt the emotional impact of hearing her story in such an immersive way. The VR experience really brought the narrative to life in a way that traditional media just cannot match. Additionally, participants had the chance to improve their presentation and speaking skills through multiple VirtualSpeech training sessions, which is just one of the many ways in which VR can help train important storytelling skills. Are you curious about how VR can elevate your storytelling techniques, or do you want to try out VR for yourself? Connect with us at DEXLab! 🎉Congratulations to Khrystyna Semen (FSE/UCV), Carmen Padilla Diaz (Brightlands Future Farming Institute), Pim Martens (FSE/UCV), Jonathan van Tilburg (FHML), Gavin Philips (FSE/CE), and Patrick Aarts (FSE) for winning an EDLAB Education Research Grant for their research proposal "Gamification involving co-creation: a way to boost engagement of freshmen in biology class"! 💡What is the issue? Student engagement is closely tied to academic outcomes. However, finding effective ways to enhance engagement during classes remains a challenge, especially for first-year students in biology. 👉🏻What will the project do? This project will assess the impact of gamification and co-creation on first-year biology students’ engagement. By involving students in the development of educational board games and integrating these games into the teaching process, it aims to boost engagement, improve academic performance, and enhance learning experiences. 📍Why is this important? The project will foster a creative approach to problem-solving at the bachelor level and strengthen the application of CCCS principles in the design and delivery of education. #EDLAB #teaching #learning #EducationResearchGrants
