This week, together with Dominique Meyers from EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning, the DEXLab team —including David Grigorjan, Jonas Heller 🟥 , and Andrea Ferruzza—held a hands-on workshop on storytelling. Organized through UMIO | Maastricht University for our Maastricht University controllers, the event explored the power and techniques of storytelling and how VR can redefine the way we share and experience stories. All 34 participants tried out the Meta Quest 3 headset and experienced VR for themselves. It was great to see their reactions as they stepped into the Anne Frank House in VR and felt the emotional impact of hearing her story in such an immersive way. The VR experience really brought the narrative to life in a way that traditional media just cannot match. Additionally, participants had the chance to improve their presentation and speaking skills through multiple VirtualSpeech training sessions, which is just one of the many ways in which VR can help train important storytelling skills. Are you curious about how VR can elevate your storytelling techniques, or do you want to try out VR for yourself? Connect with us at DEXLab! 🎉Congratulations to Khrystyna Semen (FSE/UCV), Carmen Padilla Diaz (Brightlands Future Farming Institute), Pim Martens (FSE/UCV), Jonathan van Tilburg (FHML), Gavin Philips (FSE/CE), and Patrick Aarts (FSE) for winning an EDLAB Education Research Grant for their research proposal "Gamification involving co-creation: a way to boost engagement of freshmen in biology class"! 💡What is the issue? Student engagement is closely tied to academic outcomes. However, finding effective ways to enhance engagement during classes remains a challenge, especially for first-year students in biology. 👉🏻What will the project do? This project will assess the impact of gamification and co-creation on first-year biology students’ engagement. By involving students in the development of educational board games and integrating these games into the teaching process, it aims to boost engagement, improve academic performance, and enhance learning experiences. 📍Why is this important? The project will foster a creative approach to problem-solving at the bachelor level and strengthen the application of CCCS principles in the design and delivery of education. #EDLAB #teaching #learning #EducationResearchGrants

New protest against cuts on 11 December in Maastricht WOinActie UM calls on everyone to once again join together to speak out strongly against the cabinet's plans that remain a danger to our university, city and region. On Wednesday 11 December from 14.30 to 15.30 at Plein 1992 in Maastricht, you too can join in. As the Executive Board, we support this initiative with all our hearts and ask those who can be there to do so. Of course, we would like to give everyone the opportunity to join. But because of the short notice, scheduled teaching activities and exams will go ahead that afternoon. We hope to see our UM community in large numbers at Plein 1992 tomorrow! Particularly in Maastricht’s PBL tradition, we aim for students to become self-directed learners. Yet, when confronted with an educational problem, we often lack a similar reflex to engage in self-study. Much like our students, part of the challenge is to navigate and engage with a relatively alien field of study. Are the insights from the literature fitting or transferable to the type of education we offer at Maastricht or to the specific disciplinary field we’re active in? What are the relevant sources to engage with, how do we navigate the literature, and are there techniques to cut through the “academic waffle” and find that specific answer we are looking for? 📍Join us in the second workshop in EDLAB’s Education Research Professional Development Series, where we’ll explore the variety of uses of educational research for your teaching practice. We’ll offer you hands-on guidance in finding, reading and transposing the insights to your specific educational environment. #education #teaching #learning #EDLAB #research

10 jaar UKAT! Michalina, an early AI adopter, developed the UM Prompt Library in collaboration with the University Library as part of an EDLAB innovation project. She explained the prompt's purpose and value for text writers: "This prompt allows you to improve your writing without losing control over your work. Rather than having an AI tool rewrite your text, it provides detailed feedback that you can use to refine your content. The prompt is great for anyone looking for a writing assistant while maintaining full authorship." Check out the UM Prompt Library here: https://lnkd.in/e_zNCV_D #education #teaching #learning #EDLAB

They also discussed practical ways to use GenAI tools to make teaching more engaging and prepare students for future careers. #education #teaching #learning #EDLAB
