A few months ago, I started working on this research project along with Giuliana Brancaleone, as a continuation of our MARBLE project from two years ago! As research assistants, we search for DIYs and crafts used in medical faculties around the world, conduct interviews with makers in the medical (education) field, and explore the potential of making and co-creating materials as a teaching/learning pedagogy in medical education (for Maastricht University and beyond). These results will be gathered in a catalogue, aiming to facilitate the sharing of, and learning from, DIYs and alternative materials to practice clinical skills and/or study the human anatomy. In this process, we put a strong focus on sharing resources that are sustainable, representative of different bodies, and adaptable to various geographic and/or economic contexts, with the purpose of expanding access to (medical) skills education. The ideas must be novel—different from what’s been done before—but they can’t be simply bizarre; they must be appropriate to the problem or opportunity presented. In this workshop, the creative process will be introduced through a few brief exercises. After that, we will look at what a person needs to be creative and what is so challenging about observing the world with a fresh, crisp perspective.
