“The world needs offshore solar, and we need it now.”  Yesterday at the Arctic Frontiers: Beyond Borders conference in Tromsø, Norway, I had the opportunity to expand on my statement during the panel "Ocean Multi-Use for Multi-Gain," facilitated by Ghida Fakhry. Together with Charlina Vitcheva (Director-General, DG MARE), Bente Pretlove (VP Food and Ocean Systems, DNV), and Joel Lindholm (CEO, Under Ytan), we explored the opportunities and challenges of multi-use at sea. 🔹 “We need 30x more clean energy than we produce now to achieve a net-zero energy system in Europe by 2050,” said Charlina Vitcheva. 🔹 “Our studies show that reaching such goals requires a five-fold increase in space demand,” added Bente Pretlove. I shared how #OffshoreSolar can integrate seamlessly with offshore wind, generating up to 40% more energy while using less than 5% of a wind park’s area. By leveraging the same infrastructure for grid connection, we can use the export cable more efficiently and significantly lower costs, while bringing more continuous power to land. I talked about what we at Oceans of Energy have learned after four years of testing our offshore solar farms in the high waves of the Dutch North Sea; and how we are able to have a nature positive impact as well.   We all agreed: #MultiUse at sea is essential for a sustainable future—including in the Arctic. It enables us to scale up clean energy production, support a thriving blue economy, and even restore marine ecosystems. Because, by integrating multiple ocean uses wisely, we can contribute to reach #30by30 - one of the global biodiversity targets under the Global Biodiversity Framework (adopted in December 2022), which calls for conserving 30% of the world’s oceans. #ArcticFrontiers #offshoresolar #renewableenergy #30by30

📢 World first! The SENSE-Hubs project the first to quantify the hydrodynamic wake dimensions caused by an offshore solar array. SENSE-Hubs is breaking new ground by addressing environmental questions related to the large-scale deployment of offshore solar.   These wakes are areas of reduced current and increased turbulent mixing. They are formed by interaction between floating structures and tidal currents. Understanding how far they extend – including across various farm sizes, configurations, and angles to the main current direction – is a vital step in ensuring sustainable offshore solar deployment.   📷 The animation below shows the flow around a rotated array, modelled with openFOAM. Pictured on the left are three different cross-sections, showing that the disturbance is limited to the first metres of the water column. Pictured on the right is a bird’s eye view of the solar array. In both pictures, the yellow, orange, and red-coloured areas indicate where the current decreases. Downstream of the array, we clearly see the wake being formed, with turbulent eddies shedding from the array edges.   🔅 Offshore solar can be a valuable addition to the North Sea energy system, as it is complementary to offshore wind. The Dutch government has therefore set ambitious goals on offshore solar capacity. The first megawatt-scale installations are set to be deployed in offshore wind farms in 2025. As the scaling of offshore solar advances over the coming years, our understanding of the effects of combining offshore wind and solar will grow. Deltares will focus on the effects on the North Sea’s ecosystem.   The Solar-Enhanced North Sea Energy (SENSE)-Hubs project is financed by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and led by TNO. #ThrowbackThursday: The Solar Enhanced North Sea Energy (#SENSE) stakeholder forum has brought together key stakeholders in the offshore energy transition. Missed it? Check out our aftermovie!

A major challenge slowing down the solar rollout are the #spatialchallenges, where best project sites already have been developed and new sites face (grid congestion) challenges. Moving solar #offshore is a solution, where space is plenty, incl. for #multiuse in wind farms offering surface area and grid connection availability.   Today's SolarPower Europe report shows a sharp decline in #solar growth rate, whereas annual investments have dropped. This indicates that regardless of that solar is becoming (even) cheaper, installations are not being accelerated. Covering <5% of offshore wind farm area with #OffshoreSolar allows for doubling the installed capacity; the complementarity between solar- and wind generation profiles results in that the same grid connection is (better) used. At Oceans of Energy we are bringing this solution to the market and provide thereby ample opportunity to accelerate the solar era.
