Earlier this month, members of our team from Fudación Humedales / Wetlands International LAC - Román Baigún, David Balderrama and Augusto Fumagalli - as well as Matvey Tarkhov launched a survey phase for our recently announced #peatland restoration project in Peru funded by Greenchoice in cooperation with ECOAN, SERNANP, Care for Ecosystems and Face the Future. The technical survey was accompanied by theoretical and on-site practical trainings covering such topics as peatland landscape restoration concepts, peatland mapping, peatland hydrology and peatland carbon. Trainings were conducted for the regional implementation partners, representatives of the nature conservation authorities, protected area management teams, academics, scientists and volunteers with the aim to deepen understanding of the highland peatlands’ functions, diversity and restoration opportunities. The acquired knowledge and experience will be used in practice in 2025 for the Project Design and Development phase. Stay tuned to get more updates in the upcoming year! Wetlands as natural solutions for combating desertification and drought play a crucial role in land restoration efforts. Their ability to store water, prevent soil erosion and support biodiversity makes them vital in the fight against land degradation. The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification is scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2–13 December 2024. #COP16Riyadh will convene under the theme Our Land. Despite their critical role in mitigating climate change and providing essential ecosystem services, peatlands face significant threats and remain among the most poorly understood and under-monitored ecosystems globally. The Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas evaluates the current status of peatlands worldwide and highlights the threats they face from urbanization, industrialization, land use changes, and climate change. By compiling a series of maps that analyze the location of peatlands in relation to the threats they are facing, the Atlas offers a comprehensive overview of the most at-risk and vulnerable areas. Investing in nature is investing in our future. As the final days of #COP29 negotiations approach, governments must recognize nature’s critical role in #climate action. Today, a global group of NGOs, business coalitions, Indigenous Peoples organizations, and influential individuals has issued an urgent ‘COP29 Nature Statement’ calling for strong recognition of nature in the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance text under discussion in Baku right now. There is no climate solution without nature. Since COP16, more than 80 leaders have provided their steadfast commitment to work with governments globally to deliver a year of united action on climate, nature and food systems. Nature4Climate
