🏆Huge congrats to the Antarctica New Zealand traverse crew, who have successfully made it to our deep-field drilling site at KIS3 (Kamb Ice Stream)! 💪Since completing their epic 15-day journey across the Ross Ice Shelf they’ve been working hard to set up the camp – getting the generators cranking, assembling tents, sorting the supplies, and not least preparing a 1.6km runway in the ice so that our drillers and science team can fly in from Scott Base.  📋Here's the nuts and bolts of the camp structures that will be on site this year: 2 x heated tents (mess tent and science tent) 3 x unheated tents (drill, cold science, kitchen/food storage) 2 x hard-sided heated structures (living module and warm store/science-core processing lab) 1 x camp power generator module 24 x personal sleeping tents (unheated) 2 x toilet facilities (bucket-based system) 👩🔬And inhabiting them will be 26 x intrepid humans – scientists, drillers, project and camp staff, fuelled by around 2-3 tonnes of food. 📷 The heated mess tent and food storage tent standing proud at KIS3. 🏁 And we’re off! SWAIS2C’s on-ice season is officially underway, with the first of the team departing Scott Base on their extreme polar road trip – 15 days across the Ross Ice Shelf in a convoy of Antarctica New Zealand PistenBully polar vehicles. 🛷They’re towing sleds laden with fuel, equipment, and provisions to sustain our deep-field research camp for the approximately 8-week season. The traverse team of six are making great time, some high winds along the way – check out these pics from mechanic Joe McDougal direct from the ice shelf. 🛩️Once they complete their 1128 km journey and arrive at KIS3 they’ll create a runway on the ice, so the drillers and science team can fly into the camp. We were honoured to partner last week with the Embassy of Argentina in Wellington and the Antarctic Research Centre - Te Puna Pātiotio at Victoria University of Wellington to honour 60 years of bilateral relations between New Zealand and Argentina with an event on 'Argentina and New Zealand in Antarctica: Multilateral Diplomacy and Scientific Collaboration'. After welcomes from our Director and Argentine Ambassador Maria Belen Bogado, our audience of scientists, international relations afficionados and friends of the Embassy lapped up the keynote address from Minister Fausto Lopez Crozet, the National Director for Antarctic Foreign Policy in Argentina's Foreign Ministry. After his inspiring reflections too there was a panel on bilat6eral collaborations in the southern continent with Alice R. from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, Tim Naish from the ARC, and Gabriela Roldan, PhD from the University of Canterbury. The evening was a direct consequence of conversations in April in in Buenos Aires during the visit of our academic delegation, and a fitting final thematic offering from us to the New Zealand public.
