After three consecutive months of improving conditions, the Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI) fell from 47.0 to 45.8 in October. Despite lower interest rates, the manufacturing sector continues to face significant headwinds. Recent business surveys have shown a sharp contrast between improved expectations for activity and weak current conditions. The BNZ – BusinessNZ PMI is a monthly survey of the manufacturing sector providing an early indicator of activity levels. A PMI reading above 50 points indicates manufacturing activity is expanding; below 50 indicates it is contracting. "New Zealand cannot afford to be complacent. We need to engage widely in terms of trade partners, continue to innovate our offering to the rest of the world, and remain agile in the face of global challenges. However, we should also take heart in the resilience of our exporters and the strength of the relationships we have built across Asia." Last month, I joined the Asia New Zealand Foundation for its 30th Anniversary Celebrations. Conversations about trade and exports ranged from "batten down the hatches" to "keep calm and carry on". The morning sessions covered the fundamental changes in world politics and how these shifts will impact the environment for exporters. However, I was in awe of the panel of young leaders and entrepreneurs who discussed the strong P2P relationships they have built across Asia and shared their optimism about the future of trade between Asia and New Zealand. ⬇️ Link to my reflections in the comments. #AsiaNewZealand #NZBusiness #InternationalTrade #ExportNZ Asia New Zealand Foundation ExportNZ BusinessNZ
