Today we attended the opening of one of New Zealand's largest new supermarkets, Pak n Save Highland Park, in East Auckland. Initia has been involved with this project since early 2022, providing geotechnical design and construction monitoring services to project completion. Challenging ground conditions required the development and execution of ground improvement solutions, avoiding the requirement for deep pile foundations and resulting in significant cost savings. We would like to congratulate our client, Foodstuffs North Island Limited, on yet another impressive project! We would also like to thank the collaborative team we worked with on this project. It was a pleasure working with you all. About us
Initia is a specialist geotechnical engineering consultancy that provides design, advisory and construction observation services for building, infrastructure and earthworks projects. Initia was established in 2018 by a group of four senior geotechnical specialists all with a passion to challenge the norm in professional engineering service delivery. We set out to differentiate ourselves from others by delivering value outcomes to our Clients, by investing extra energy and thought into projects and above all, by being responsive. Our company name was derived from our core belief that we must always use our initiative, that each project has a different set of requirements, conditions and challenges, and that we should always deliver more than just what we have been asked for. Unlike other firms, we don’t sell time, we sell the value we provide to our client’s projects. We see ourselves as stakeholders in our Client’s success and we aim to demonstrate the value we add by aligning our incentives with our Client’s. Whilst our company is new, each of our four Directors has a well-established brand in the industry, built on 15 to 20 years of delivering client-focussed outcomes, responsive service and specialist expertise. At Initia, we are genuinely excited and challenged by the difference we can make to your project and the industry in general by working together as the sum of all our parts.

It's been a journey to say the least but it’s one I’m incredibly proud of. Tairāwhiti has it’s challenges but it’s a special place full of great people who really care about it. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this process but especially those from the community that took the time to share their perspectives, knowledge, and values as ultimately this will be an asset and service for them and our region. I’m privileged to be in a role that I’m really able do my bit for our region through transformational projects like this. With these permissions in place now I’m looking forward to delivering the Twin Berth project with the talented and dedicated team at Eastland Port. The list is long but thank you to those assisted Eastland Port through this process. Many of you have become great friends through this decade long process. So long in fact that LinkedIn wouldn't let me mention you all! However I must take a moment to thank those that have been on this journey with the port since the early days and seen it through. Aaron Andrew, Mark Poynter, Georgina McPherson, Max Dunn, Michael Lindgreen at SLR Consulting David Aubourg, Patrick McCallum at Worley Hamish Nicholson Reginald Proffit at WSP Andy Pomfret at Initia Tom Shand, Nathan Hickman, Jamie Yule at Tonkin + Taylor Brett Beamsley, Alexis Berthot at MetService Lynda Walter at InSitu Heritage Alana Lampitt, Catherine Somerville-Frost at Chapman Tripp Todd Whittaker and the processing team at Gisborne District Council Thank you for your dedication and perseverance to this project.
🚨 BIG NEWS 🚨 Last week, the Environment Court issued our consent for Twin Berth Stage Two, securing approvals for one of Tairāwhiti’s most significant infrastructure projects. This development paves the way for a future-ready port that can berth two large vessels, boosting trade and strengthening our region’s resilience. This achievement reflects over a decade of collaboration with our community. We'd like to sincerely thank everyone for their support. Together, we’re building infrastructure that will benefit Tairāwhiti for generations to come. It has been great seeing the design of this Queenstown project reach completion! The result of the hard work and collaboration of a great team. We look forward to construction commencing on the site! Andrew Klahn
Set to be perched on the prestigious Queenstown Hill, this high-end 8-unit, 3-level residential development with a basement car park is designed to be a landmark. Boasting unrivaled views over Lake Wakatipu, it promises to be a stunning addition to the area. This project is the vision of Ignite Architecture, brought to life through collaboration with an exceptional project consultant group, including Maven Civil Engineers, Initia Geotechnical Engineers, Living Breathing Buildings Services, Cognition Fire Engineers, Electrical Consulting Services Ltd., and The Structural Firm for structural engineering design. As structural engineers, we delivered a bespoke solution, encompassing: A comprehensive finite element seismic response analysis, and a fully coordinated BIM and drawing package, achieving a minimum Level of Development (LOD) 350. Our meticulous approach provided the client with confidence in the controlled realisation of their vision.

We are happy and proud, to have played a small part. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on the very well deserved award.
We’re thrilled that our new Transport Hub has been awarded “Infrastructure Project of the Year 2024, Large Airport” at the New Zealand Airports Awards. Additionally, Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Airport Hotel, our joint venture with Tainui Group Holdings Limited, was recognised as a runner-up in the “Commercial and Non-Aeronautical Initiative of the Year” category. These annual awards from our industry association celebrate excellence in airport projects and initiatives across New Zealand. The Transport Hub represents a $300 million investment, designed to enhance traveller convenience with a fully covered drop-off/pick-up area, multi-level parking, and seamless connectivity. It has transformed the way travellers arrive and depart from the international terminal and is a key to meeting future demand and supporting New Zealand’s connectivity to the world. This recognition highlights the collaborative effort and dedication from across the airport to deliver innovative infrastructure that meets the needs of travellers and stakeholders alike. Auckland Airport’s new Transport Hub at the International Terminal is complete! This $300M development features a five-storey car parking building with over 80,000 m² of floor space, ground-level Pick-Up and Drop-Off (PUDO) lanes for buses and vehicles, and other services like valet and premium parking. Initia commenced work on this project in 2020 with geotechnical investigations, followed by static and dynamic pile load testing to confirm the preferred foundation system; over 1,200 driven timber poles, extending 10–14 m below ground level. We’re proud to have added significant value to this project, with the foundation construction costing millions less than the original option, freeing up budget to enhance the building’s architectural design and functionality. We think it looks fantastic! A big congratulations to everyone involved! ✅ Project Completion – Residential Slope Stabilisation in Queenstown 🏔 Initia’s Queenstown office has recently completed our first slope stabilisation project in the Queenstown Lakes region. The site, located between Lake Whakatipu and the foothills of the Remarkables, presented a stepped 7-meter high slope that was actively eroding and slumping after a previous stabilisation attempt had failed. Our team designed a tailored solution involving soil nails, erosion matting, and a mesh facing to secure the slope and prevent further land movement. The design was successfully constructed by the skilled team at Ground Anchor Systems. This project marks an important milestone for our Queenstown office as we continue to deliver geotechnical solutions across the region.
