Transforming plastic waste from global problem to valuable resource.

About us

NILO's vision is a clean and abundant future where nothing goes to waste. We are chemists, engineers, technologists and entrepreneurs on an urgent mission to help save our planet. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, NILO is a deep tech company focused on turning plastic waste into new products that seamlessly integrate into the world’s existing supply chain driving rapid replacement and adoption of problem materials like urea formaldehyde and concrete. NILO’s investors include: SDG Impact Japan, Clare Foundation, Icehouse Ventures, and K1W1. We see our technology as the beginning of a new plastic waste economy - one in which repurposing and plastic accreditation, drives plastic waste collection globally. We are here to align human industry with both by turning the world’s waste from a problem into an opportunity, one use case at a time. Drawing on the expertise of an executive board that integrates scientific advancements within a uniquely Kiwi/Maori cultural synthesis that stresses kaitiakitanga, NILO fulfils its role in techno-repurposing industrialisation through a low-carbon emission process that starts with plastics but when fully realised will turn not only plastics, but construction waste, tires and a wide-range of solid waste into a range of circular economy products and solutions. NILO believes our technology can be the beginning of a new plastic waste economy. Learn more at NILO.world

We were grateful to host Hon. Simon Watts recently at NILO's HQ. helping to amplify awareness around the #sustainability challenge our technology is poised to tackle at scale. It's always a busy day at HQ!

This is a big problem. Just 9% of the 350 million tonnes of plastic waste generated every year is recycled. Tucked away on the North Shore is a company at the cutting edge of technology. NILO is turning waste plastics into a binding agent to be used in creating flooring and furniture. Think wood-based products like particle board, plywood and MDF. It’s a startup that is accomplishing big things, and it’s already entered into a partnership with IKEA. Kiwi ingenuity at its best tackling one of our biggest sustainability problems.

Excited to share the results of a series of tests we conducted on our #plasticwaste derived #binder across a range of key industry metrics versus international standards. Here it goes: • 12% improvement on Modulus of Elasticity • 43% improvement on Modulus of Rupture • 56% improvement on Internal Bond Strength • 66% improvement on Swell Test The tests suggest that soft plastic derived binder can deliver superior performance in the areas critical for #woodfibreboard such as elasticity (resistance to deformation under load), rupture (the maximum stress the board can withstand before breaking), internal bond strength (resistance to layer separation), and swell (minimisation of thickness increase when subjected to moisture). Watch this space. More results to come.

We are very excited to have been involved with the NZ Cleantech Mission's report into what Aotearoa New Zealand's fast-growing start-up companies can achieve for NZ's economy and environment. By the early 2030s, global spending on the journey to net zero will reach US$4.5 trillion. There is a major opportunity for New Zealand to take a leadership position in this space, and we welcome the energy and forward thinking approach and support that all businesses in this space are receiving. As our CEO, Glen Willoughby, was quoted in the report: "The NILO ambition is to generate a CO2 emissions reduction of three million tonnes initially, and enable repurposing of two million metric tons of soft plastic waste which is currently not recyclable. "The report was launched by Minister Simon Watts, Minister for Climate Change and Minister for Revenue, who spoke about the importance of technology and innovation in reaching both economic and climate ambitions. Thanks to The MacDiarmid Institute Institute for preparing the report and helping to focus New Zealand behind a cleantech innovation future. That's a wrap for Cleantech Forum Asia! Across two days in the host city, Singapore, Cleantech Group brought together more than 200 leaders in the sustainable innovation ecosystem to discuss the key issues in our sector. Topics ranged from adaptation, resource security, maritime sustainability, investment trends, blue economy and AI. NILO was invited to present on the work that we've been doing to turn plastic waste into a resource, and convert it into an adhesive binder with multiple applications - including in the manufacture of the wood boards for furniture giant, IKEA. The response from the audience and event organisers was incredible. Thank you for putting on a wonderful event, and we look forward to coming back next year!

Thank you Forbes and Erik Kobayashi-Solomon for your coverage of our technology and the global opportunity to turn #plasticwaste into a benefit for humanity (instead of a problem. Here's some of what Erik wrote: NILO's process innovates legacy wood fiber board manufacturing by replacing a toxic, carcinogenic, and high carbon footprint adhesive called urea formaldehyde (UF). NILO Binder generates fewer carbon dioxide emissions in its production process and emits no off-gasses, making the manufacturing process safer and more environmentally friendly while producing boards that are healthier to have in one’s home. While I appreciate the lowered carbon footprint and human health benefits, I am even more interested in NILO's technology because of how its binder is made. The primary feedstock for NILO binder is plastic waste that would normally be incinerated or wind up making its way into the oceans and from there, into our food chain. The company says it can convert nearly 60% of the 400 million tons of plastic annually produced—including normally non-recyclable varieties like marine plastics and films—into its binder. NILO Binder is combined with wood chips and compressed under heat to produce particle boards. Slight changes in the process allow for the manufacture of other wood products like MDF and plywood. Interested in seeing NILO’s innovation in action? We’ve got some photos to share! What you see here is a particle board made from the NILO binder made from soft plastic waste from the construction industry. In New Zealand alone 5,000 metric tonnes of this plastic waste is collected each year, and as you can guess, globally the volume is enormous. But with this innovation, we can put that waste to use for furniture and other applications – turning otherwise unusable plastic waste into a resource that can improve supply chains and produce some excellent quality products.

Interested in seeing NILO’s innovation in action? We’ve got some photos to share! This is what a wooden board looks like when bound using NILO’s adhesive produced from Agricultural soft plastic waste. Did you know that in New Zealand, 15,000 tons of plastic waste is produced annually in the agricultural sector? Rather than try and dispose of it (it can’t be conventionally recycled) we can take it and repurpose it into something that goes into furniture and other household goods. This is a very high-quality and robust board.

Happy holidays from the team at #NILO! 2023 has seen so much progress towards realising our vision for tackling #plasticwaste by turning it into a valuable #circulareconomy resource! With 400 million tonnes of plastic waste generated every year, and just 9% of it recycled, this is one of our planet's greatest challenges and also one of our greatest opportunities. Rather than try to curtail plastic use, which is unrealistic, we believe solutions need to be developed that take that plastic waste and put it to use to renew nature. That’s what our team of chemists and engineers have developed, and our technology is getting attention. Earlier this year, Inter IKEA took a 12.5% stake in the company and assumed a board position. NILO’s lead solution – an industrial adhesive – has real potential for seamlessly replacing incumbent materials by slotting directly into the global supply chain. Then, in October, LanzaTech co-founder, Dr. Sean Simpson, joined our board, bringing us a wealth of experience in the successful commercialisation of science in the support of true environmental impact. We have also continued to grow our team, and we are now set to significantly scale our solutions further in 2024. We hope you all have a wonderful and restful holiday, and thanks for your support and curiosity in 2023! And if you haven't had a chance to learn more about our vision, why not take a look now: https://lnkd.in/gutYM-QQ #technorepurposing #ecomining #circulareconomy #plasticwaste #recycling #repurposing
