#research 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘀 ❗ Several species of the genus #Pseudomonas are known to be highly tolerant to #solvents and #environmental stress. Based on phylogenomic and comparative genomic analyses, some Pseudomonas species were recently transferred to a new genus named #Halopseudomonas, often more stable and active under extreme conditions. This makes them ideal candidates for: 🧪 #Biocatalysis in industrial processes, especially those involving #harsh chemical environments. ☣️ #Bioremediation, where they can help degrade pollutants in saline or solvent-rich environments. ♻️ #Sustainable_Biotechnology, including the production of value-added compounds. In a recently published paper, Carla C.C.R. de Carvalho, the student Pedro Mattos, and scientists from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and Forschungszentrum Jülich, both in Germany, evaluated the growth parameters and #stress_tolerance of five Halopseudomonas strains. EG35 isolated from the octocoral Eunicella gazella off the coast of Portugal 🌊 🌏. The bacterium has the capacity to biosynthesize #polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), ♻️biodegradable polyesters that may be used to produce bioplastics. Lentilitoribacter are slow-growing #Alphaproteobacteria that are rarely retrieved in culture. The strain 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗼’𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗘𝘃𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, an extensive well-curated marine bacterial culture collection integrated into the Biobanco Azul Português. This work delivers the second RefSeq genome for the genus Lentilitoribacter. The first RefSeq genome derives from a Lentilioribacter strain isolated from a marine sponge and is also part of the MicroEcoEvo Collection. Strain EG35 was isolated and the genome assembled by MSc students Lydia Kozma and Selene Moura Madureira in the framework of their MSc theses while PhD student Ana Fernandes tested its #PHA production capacity. The work was led by iBB-Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences/Departamento de Bioengenharia researchers Tina Keller-Costa and Rodrigo Costa. #project New funded project on Yeast Biology and Bioinformatics, in the framework of the OSCARS project platform 📣 A new project co-coordinated by Miguel Cacho Teixeira, at #iBB/Departamento de Bioengenharia (Instituto Superior Técnico) and by Pedro Monteiro, at INESC-ID, was just funded in the framework of the European Union OSCARS project (Open Science Cluster’s Action for Research & Society) platform. #Yeasts are vital organisms in both the #bioeconomy, e.g. through the industrial production of food, energy and commodities, and in health research, due to their role as pathogens and model organisms for studying genetics and disease 🧫. ✅ The #FAIRY project focuses on enhancing #YEASTRACT+, a widely used open-access #FAIR-sharing Knowledge-base and ELIXIR /BioData.pt service constructed in 2006, under the leadership of Isabel Sá-Correia in collaboration with INESC-ID, expanded ever since, and that supports research on yeast transcriptional regulation. ✅ The FAIRY project promotes #OpenScience principles to make yeast regulatory data in YEASTRACT+ more #FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), fostering global collaboration and accelerating discoveries in #yeast-based #biotechnology, sustainable #bioeconomy, and #humanhealth research.
