Last week, European Viable Cities Day took off, hosted by Viable Cities and the European Commission Representation. The day highlighted the mission of climate-neutral and sustainable cities by 2030. It featured a panel discussion on the climate transition and the signing ceremony of Climate City Contract 2030. Smart City Sweden was part of facilitating the sessions throughout the day, together with actors such as the Sweden-US Green Transition Initiative, Vinnova the Swedish Energy Agency, Business Sweden and the Embassy of Sweden Washington. The day before, a group of selected leaders were invited to discuss the aggregated purchasing power of private and public city stakeholders for the global transition to climate neutrality. The aim was to come together around a joint initiative. The group also went on several study visits, such as to the new urban district Slakthusområdet and had meetings with the city of Stockholm and the Swedish Internet Foundation, to name a few. #Climateneutralcities #Sustainablecities #climatetransition #climatecitycontracts

🌇 City officials from Annapolis, the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland, visited Sweden last week. The delegation visited Stockholm and Gothenburg to explore solutions and collaboration opportunities within sustainable transport (such as electric ferries), sustainable buildings and retrofitting, and the green transition in cities. The group met with companies, transportation experts, urban planners, and more. 🚚 Smart City Sweden also received a visit from China Academy of Safety Science and Technology. The main interest of the delegation was to look at the safety measures while transporting hydrogen fuel gas. Smart City Sweden’s Lidia Partheni gave an introduction and Anders Hjort, Senior Expert at IVL, talked about the biogas/biomethane value chain from production, and distribution to end use, as well as the challenges and risks. This week, Smart City Sweden arranged two visits together with ElectriCITY Innovation in the sustainable district of Hammarby sjöstad.🏙 In the early 1990s, Hammarby Sjöstad had a reputation for being a run-down, polluted and unsafe industrial and residential area. Today, Hammarby Sjöstad is one of Stockholm’s most attractive residential districts and a model of successful urban renewal. A delegation from the City of Hamburg and the HafenCity University Hamburg visited the districts to exchange experiences on Urban Digital Twins. Some of the topics discussed were the Urban Twin Transition Centre, a strategic initiative that uses digitalisation for a green transition in cities and the digital Twin Libra, an arena for the energy sector to simulate tomorrow’s energy system. Visiting Hammarby sjöstad this week was also a delegation from the Taoyuan City government, where Hammarby sjöstad and its management were presented and discussed. They were also given a guided tour around parts of the district. Smart City Sweden was in 2021 approached by stakeholders from the city of Kampala regarding the unsustainable waste situation in the capital of Uganda. The next step has now been taken to lay the foundation to make an incineration facility in the city a reality. - The Kiteezi dump site is the only place where the waste from the city goes, which is about 1300 tons per day. The proposed incineration facility will take the load off Kiteezi while decreasing the climate impact and providing better working and living conditions in the area, among other positive benefits, says Kåre Sundin, Project Director of the feasibility study. #WasteToValue #WasteManagement #Climatechange
