President of México Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor of Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán Joaquín Díaz Mena recently announced the historic upcoming construction of a deep-sea port in Progreso, Yucatán. This strategic project, set to commence this year 2024 and conclude in three years, is expected to revolutionise the region by accommodating large ships, attracting investments, and creating higher-paying job opportunities. The port's modernisation aims to position Progreso as a key hub on the Peninsula, and a significant step towards Yucatán's economic growth and industrial advancement and connectivity. Yesterday and today together with Eva Lapsiņa we spent two fruitful days at the PES Board Meeting of the European Network of Public Employment Services in Budapest. The meeting brought together board members and experts from all member states. Discussions addressed key labour market challenges – skills shortages, digital transformation, and the integration of long-term unemployed individuals. As part of the meeting, together with the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund (Eesti Töötukassa) and the Employment Service Under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania (Užimtumo tarnyba / Lithuanian Employment Service) the Baltic States' 2025 Annual Activity Plan for Employment Services was signed. The plan emphasizes collaboration on developing skills assessment systems, exchanging best practices in youth employment support, and advancing green skills. This initiative strengthens regional cooperation and prepare the way for sustainable solutions to tackle labour market challenges across the Baltic region. #PESBoardBudapest2024 #BalticPES

Some of the key discussion points included: Sustainable Technology Collaboration: Highlighting the discussion on Canada's need for Finnish sustainable technology, with an emphasis on CO2 reduction, energy, and water savings. This point showcases Finland's leadership in environmental technology and the potential for collaborative innovation between the two countries. Homelessness and Housing Policy: Sharing insights from the discussion on Finland's approach to homelessness, emphasizing the "Housing First" strategy, which prioritizes providing homes to the homeless before addressing social or health problems. This can serve as a model for addressing homelessness and housing issues globally. International Business Strategy: Concluding with the Minister's emphasis on the importance of Finland increasing business cooperation with North America, using Canada as a gateway to the larger U.S. market. How can Australia cement its place as a cultural powerhouse - and what benefits would this deliver to our people, our nation and our region? These questions were explored by A New Approach (ANA) Chair Rupert Myer AO in his Address to the National Press Club, exactly one year ago today. Rupert's vision of a cultural powerhouse is a nation which cherishes its unique cultural inheritance, invests in its creators and cultural organisations, celebrates its creative industries and enables all its citizens to participate in meaningful cultural activities. If we can achieve this, Rupert said, "Australia can have a future in which our people are healthier and happier, our communities are more connected, our nation is more prosperous, and our region is more stable and sustainable". The Guardian of Future Generations, in collaboration with Sostenibilità, Sustainable Development Malta & Gabriel Caruana Foundation, has just launched an evidence-based project focused on the co-production of meaningful, healthy, and playful spaces within the localities of Safi, Żurrieq and Kirkop. 👉 It is focused on researching how diverse communities perceive their surrounding urban and natural environment to involve them in co-designing sustainable neighborhoods that enhance quality of life and reduce health inequalities. 👉 It promotes the social value of infrastructure, health equity, and fosters community building and integrating nature through an innovative approach for evaluating and shaping healthier, playful, and more connected places. 👉 This project also lays a rich blueprint for planners, developers, and policymakers working to support residents’ wellbeing. ✅ We have already initiated an 💬 open dialogue with the three local councils pictured and several relevant stakeholders.
