It has been an eventful and rewarding week for aquaculture research in Singapore, marking significant achievements for our team ! Here's a recap of the highlights: 1️⃣ New S$40M Funding for Agri-Food R&D and Translation On November 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong, announced the next phase of the Singapore Food Story (SFS) R&D Programme during the Singapore International Agri-Food Week. With S$40M dedicated to accelerating food innovation in urban agriculture, aquaculture, future foods, and food safety, we are thrilled to have been awarded funding for two impactful projects: - AquaGuard: Investigating innovative solutions for disease resilience in barramundi and shrimp through non-lethal heat shock, functional feed, and recombinant peptides. Partners: Adisseo, Vertical Oceans, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Peptobiotics, and Opal Resources Pte Ltd. - SALSA (Sustainable Aquafeed for Local Singaporean Aquaculture): Developing sustainable aquafeed solutions for local farming systems. Partners: A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, and Century Aquaculture Pte Ltd. 2️⃣ Launch of the Singapore Aquaculture Plan (SAP) On November 19, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Poh-Koon Koh (Dr), unveiled the Singapore Aquaculture Plan (SAP) at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit. As a panel member in its development, I was honored to contribute to this year-long collaboration involving over 30 stakeholders. The SAP provides a strategic roadmap to make Singapore’s aquaculture sector more productive and sustainable. 🎥 Watch the SAP launch video. https://lnkd.in/gKMcSjqB 3️⃣ Sharing Insights at Singapore International Agri-Food Week On November 21, I had the privilege of presenting at the Singapore International Agri-Food Week, discussing our research on fish metabolism and strategies to reduce overfeeding for sustainable aquaculture. The event was an incredible platform for knowledge and a good opportunity to meet again some of the keynote speakers: Professor Ross Houston: Director of Genetics & Innovation, Benchmark Holdings plc. Professor Leo Marcelis: Chair of Horticulture and Product Physiology, Wageningen University & Research. Professor Jay Keasling: Philomathia Distinguished Professor of Alternative Energy, University of California, Berkeley. Introducing the young Asian changemakers who are driving climate action in their communities and across the region! Arising from an initiative by Indonesia Ministry of Health and Temasek Foundation to advocate the use of wastewater surveillance for zoonotic pathogens in humans for pandemic preparedness, Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) and Temasek Foundation jointly hosted guests from the Public Health Laboratory and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) of Indonesia. Our guests from Indonesia toured TLL laboratory facilities, including the Pathnova Laboratories , and gained insights into the various types of virus and mosquito vector research undertaken by TLL. They also visited PUB’s Ulu Pandan Water Reclamation Plant, hosted by Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, and PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, where automated methods to collect wastewater samples were shared. TLL hopes to continue to develop our international network of partnerships in Singapore, Indonesia and beyond to create a positive impact to the lives of people in Asia and beyond. 🤗

🌿🐟 New research on tropical RAS for barramundi farmers! 🐟🌿 In this large-scale study, we explored what the French call “zootechnie” to find the optimal stocking density and feeding rates in RAS systems. Just last week, Addison Goh gave us a mini tour at Gardens by the Bay! We were excited to see the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory tomatoes growing well, alongside many other beautiful blooms! Growing in Biome 3 since June, these tomatoes are monitored weekly for growth and fruit development. Once the tomatoes have ripen, TLL researchers evaluate their quality, focusing on size, sugar content, and acidity. This project aims to breed varieties perfect for urban farming—compact, high-yield, nutrient dense and delicious. Together, we’re not just growing tomatoes but reimagining the future of urban agriculture! 🍅🌿  #UrbanFarming #SustainableAgriculture #Innovation

Last week, Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory took part in releasing Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes as part of Project Wolbachia – Singapore. We were privileged to have Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, join us for this milestone event, where she announced the project’s expansion to five additional sites starting October 2024. With this expansion, the initiative will extend its reach from 480,000 to 580,000 households across Singapore. 🏠 At TLL, we've been collaborating with National Environment Agency on this project to reduce the Aedes mosquito population and help combat dengue in Singapore. 🇸🇬 This initiative highlights the power of life sciences to address critical public health challenges, and we’re excited to continue driving impactful innovations in this field.
