"Don’t Call Him Mr Mari Kita" was a fitting musical for us to host our donors and partners leading up to our National Day. The thought-provoking and stirring musical on the life and legacy of Zubir Said who wrote Majulah Singapura resonated with us at The Majurity Trust. What we learnt from that poignant musical was the heart of an incredible individual whose work stretches far beyond our national anthem. Zubir Said’s other song "Semoga Bahagia", which many of us sang in school during Children’s Day, spoke about achieving happiness as we work hard to progress onward together with kindness and respect between friends. This is a simplified summary but it exemplifies the values we share in working together with donors and partners to create a society where everyone can thrive. We are grateful to have been able to host our #socialimpact partners, donors and all who support us together with Community Foundation of Singapore for the opening night of Don’t Call Him Mr Mari Kita. Don’t Call Him Mr Mari Kita is a Wild Rice production that offers a poignant and moving tribute to Zubir Said’s life, legacy and works performed by Julian Wong - one of Singapore’s most acclaimed music directors. #socialimpact #nationalday #majuritysg

  • Thanks so much for sharing, and joining us on opening night Abel Ang! 🙏 It truly does come full circle - Zubir Said taught Iskandar Ismail, one of Singapore's most prominent musicians, who in turn went on to teach Julian Wong himself. Zubir Said was so passionate about teaching and imparting knowledge to the next generation. He said: “Knowledge is not meant to be taken to the grave. Those whom I teach today can teach others later on.” Julian has now been teaching for nine years, and is a very well-loved teaching figure in the ITE College Central community. It's incredible seeing him perform with his 4 amazingly talented students in this show. May Zubir Said's legacy live on! ❤️

Attended the opening night of "Don't Call Him Mr. Mari Kita" to get a dose of National Day spirit, but was instead blown away by the ITE Connection... Maestro Julian Wong shared about his journey with his 4 ITE students and how they have gone on to do well in their lives: ⭐️ Leonard Mikhail as a musician(IG: leoxmik). ⭐️ Hani Sa'id as a singer(IG: honey_piey). ⭐️ Hannah Nordin as a graphic designer(LinkedIn: hannahnordin). ⭐️ Malcolm Lim who is serving as an Officer in Ministry of Defence of Singapore. The musical is a tribute to the composer of Singapore's National Anthem, Zubir Said, who spent the twilight years of his life educating and nurturing children's love for music. The tribute comes full circle as Julian proudly presents his own ITE students who clearly love music. It is said that a teacher's heart beats with the same patriotism that pulses through a nation's spirit, nurturing minds to shape a brighter future for all. Exactly one year after our sold-out run at Wild Rice, my one-woman dark comedy on gender power dynamics 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 is going to the 🇬🇧Edinburgh Festival Fringe!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We will be playing at the legendary Summerhall (which was home to “Baby Reindeer”) from 𝟭 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟲 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝟳:𝟰𝟱 𝗽𝗺. Artistic Director of Wild Rice Ivan Heng told me that I should take 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 to Edinburgh, immediately after he watched the dramatised reading in Nov 2022. What a dream to actually go there with one of my dearest friends Sindhura Kalidas, for whom I wrote this play. I can’t wait for the world to witness her phenomenal talent! 🥲💫 The Edinburgh edition remains unapologetically set in Singapore 🇸🇬. I hope that British audiences connect with what I consider to be a universal story about the concessions we make in our search for love, which happens to be told through a Tamil Christian woman in Singapore. I am thrilled that my friends in the UK will finally get to see one of my plays. Please tell your UK-based friends about 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 and follow our adventures at @𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 on Instagram. I’ll be attending every show as chief hype woman from 1 to 16 August and am happy to chat and meet folks in Edinburgh! 🎟️ 𝗧𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 are £17 / £14.50, available at: https://lnkd.in/gqRK_RUF ⚡️𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 the Psychobitchery: https://lnkd.in/gDUP7PfT ♥️ With love and gratitude to our director/theatre mom Pam Oei, producer Shien Hian Lim, stage manager Anne Lee, all the designers, crew and production team from the 🇸🇬 edition of Psychobitch, and the Psychobitch Support Group of friends, family and patrons of the arts who generously gave to make our international premiere possible. We hope you’d be proud of the show we’ve made together. 🥹

  • Thanks so much for joining us at trans:mission, G Pereira! 💖

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending trans:mission at Wild Rice theatre. Tickets are sold out, but the show was simply amazing and thought-provoking. It was so well written and staged, I would strongly recommend that you attend the future runs if you can! “What is it like for someone to grow up ‘transgender’, or ‘trans’, in Singapore? What challenges do trans people here face in simply trying to be who they are? How have they not only survived, but thrived, finding joy and creating community in a society that isn’t always forgiving of any deviation from heteronormative standards? In conjunction with Pride Month, Wild Rice proudly presents trans:mission, the first work in Singapore that is fully devised, written and performed by trans people. Through a series of structured conversations around keywords such as ‘transphobia’, ‘dysphoria’ and ‘utopia’, this inspiring new work celebrates the stories of trans folk – told in their own words, and with their own voices.” 📷: Wild Rice #LGBTQplay #PrideMonth #Singapore

  • We're so excited to share that Wild Rice's production of G*d Is A Woman has just been named 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 by The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards! And that's not all - Joel Tan has also won the 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭 award for this devastatingly funny new play! 🎉 Staging new plays is always a risky proposition for any theatre company. But Wild Rice has always persevered in providing a home for new and original Singapore theatre. We believe in the importance of investing in new work, because theatre holds up a mirror to our world, and it is new writing that keeps that reflection clear and true. That is exactly what G*d Is A Woman does. It is a bitingly funny satire on censorship and Singapore's cancel culture that dares us to examine our relationship with art and the often punishing system in which new works are made in Singapore. This is a play that doesn't pull any punches. It asks big questions, doesn't offer easy answers, and is often as profoundly unsettling as it is howlingly funny. We are very grateful to The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards (Sor Fern Ong, Clement Yong, Charmaine Lim, Shawn Hoo) for recognising a new and original play like G*d Is A Woman, and to every person, on stage and off, who worked with us to pull this production off. Most importantly, we would like to thank the audiences who supported this show by showing up for it - every single person who joined us at the theatre, who laughed with us, and who took a chance on something new and unknown. You inspire us to keep telling Singaporean stories that matter. 🙏 Congratulations to all the winners this year! We know how much work, love and care go into each and every one of the productions we all share with our audiences, and we couldn't be more proud to be a part of Singapore's theatre community with all of you. ❤️ Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/g8-X53ce #sgtheatre #theatre #wildricesg #arts #stlifetheatreawards2024
