The struggle for land ownership and control has led to numerous cases of violence, including murder, against women who dare to challenge patriarchal norms. #HappeningNow: Civil Society Organizations, led by the Food Rights Alliance, are meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Climate Change to submit proposals for transitioning to smart, clean, resilient, and green cities in urban centers. A position paper with recommendations has been submitted to the committee. We have organized a two-day training session for land actors in collaboration with LANDnet Uganda to equip them with insights into the strategic directions of the National Development Plan IV (NDP IV) and how they can advocate for land reforms. As Uganda transitions from NDP III to NDP IV, there is a crucial opportunity to shape land reform strategies and to understand the priorities outlined by the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development in the Program Implementation Action Plans (PIAPs), particularly concerning gender disparities in land access and management. NDP IV is the fourth of six five-year National Development Plans aimed at implementing Uganda Vision 2040. It is the final plan designed to fulfill the global Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Goals and the first within the government's strategy for achieving tenfold growth. Exciting News! We are thrilled to share the successful kickoff of our groundbreaking project, "Just Transitions towards Carbon Neutral Landscapes: Tenure Rights for Restoration," implemented by LANDnet Uganda with support from TMG Research gGmbH - TMG Think Tank for Sustainability Research and the Robert Bosch Stiftung. This initiative aims to document and promote best practices in achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), striking a balance between environmental conservation and strengthening the tenure rights of indigenous people. Yesterday, our first inception meeting with traditional, religious, and community leaders from Paicho in Gulu district was a resounding success! These leaders highlighted the critical role of land governance structures, including traditional ones, in ensuring the smooth implementation of LDN measures while maintaining social cohesion.
