Scottish Branch: Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK Scotland)
Non-profit Organizations
Working to increase the number of ethnic minority people who pursue and have successful careers within engineering.
About us
AFBE-UK provides support and promotes higher achievements in Education and Engineering particularly among students and professionals from ethnic minority backgrounds. The proportion of United Kingdom (UK) citizens from ethnic minority communities is projected to reach between 20 and 30 percent by 2050. The UK has a long standing history of engineering achievement. However the UK engineering sector is currently experiencing a shortage of skilled professionals. Only 7.8% of UK engineers from Black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds although an average of 25% of engineering university graduates are from BME backgrounds. AFBE-UK works to increase the number of ethnic minority people who pursue a career and have successful careers within the engineering industry. We promote diversity in engineering and technology through our programmes and activities which are led by exceptional professionals and leaders in the Engineering industry and are designed to bring about meaningful change, sustainable growth and development and a lasting positive impact to the UK. We also welcome professionals that have engineering backgrounds but work in other sectors such as information technology, banking, finance, etc.

It was an incredible evening spent in great company at the #OEUKAwards24. One of the highlights for me was the passionate and thought-provoking speech by David Whitehouse which left me reflecting on the future of an industry that has contributed so much—and continues to contribute—to the UK economy. I was particularly proud of the nomination of Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK) as a finalist for the Neighbour of the Year award. While we didn’t win this time, being acknowledged in this category is a huge honour and a testament to the impactful work AFBE-UK is doing. At AFBE-UK, our contributions extend beyond fostering community development. We are actively changing narratives and positively influencing the next generation in this industry, and I’m deeply honoured to serve as an ambassador for this inspiring organisation. Congratulations to all the winners at #OEUKAwards24! And a heartfelt congratulations to Ollie Folayan MBE and the entire Scottish Branch: Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK Scotland) team, Ebere OMartins. Olaitan Akinyele, Rakhi Gupta, Mayolein MacDonald, Dr Urenna Vivian Adegbotolu, Wilson Moahyi, Ikechukwu Onyegiri, Mo O., for your dedication and unwavering commitment to making a difference. Don't forget to join us next week at the very last leadership Talk series for the year with Dr Nelson Ogunshakin FREng OBE as he shares his remarkable journey on building a lasting legacy. The Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK) proudly partnered with WSP in the UK to deliver the 20th and final University Transition Event of the year—a truly inspiring day of learning and growth. The event kicked off with an impactful session led by @Louise Elliot, who shared her incredible career journey, from relocation and career pivots to embracing challenges with perseverance. Her advice to “say yes to opportunities and embrace growth through challenges” resonated deeply with everyone in attendance, setting the tone for a memorable and motivating event. The graduate panel provided invaluable insights into mentorship, perseverance, and navigating application processes, offering candid advice on managing the often-challenging transition from university to professional life. Kerry Sneddon shared expert advice on the WSP application process, highlighting common pitfalls and strategies for success. Attendees gained meaningful feedback during the CV reviews, mock interviews, and group exercises, equipping them with practical tools to enhance their applications and interviews. Additionally, the group activities helped sharpen their communication and teamwork skills—essential assets for any career. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one participant remarking, “The experience was amazing and changed my perspective. No money can measure it.” It was an enriching and impactful day. We look forward to bringing more of these transformative experiences to universities, companies, and cities near you next year. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of it!

Our Founder, Lewis Hamilton, launched The Hamilton Commission in 2020 to research the underrepresentation of Black people in UK motorsport. One of the key findings, alongside the report’s 10 recommendations, was the disproportionate rate of school exclusions for students from Black Caribbean backgrounds. Mission 44 was formed out of these recommendations, with a specific focus on building a more inclusive education system that tackles the root causes of school exclusion, and where every young person feels like they belong. Hear from Lewis on how his own experience of exclusion has led to the launch of our Nothing Happens in Isolation campaign.
