Since the late 19th century, balloons have been a valuable tool for scientific exploration. Scientists have used balloons to gather data on wind patterns, greenhouse gas concentrations, aerosols, and radiation. Balloons offer the advantage of drifting with the wind, allowing for extended observation periods and the collection of air samples. This capability has been helpful in studying the ozone layer, monitoring greenhouse gas levels, and investigating complex atmospheric phenomena. As space technology has advanced, balloons have continued to play a crucial role. They serve as a cost-effective platform for testing satellite components and instruments, such as star trackers, thermal cameras, and solar cells, under near-space conditions. Using helium, our zero-pressure balloons can reach an altitude of 37km, and the duration of the flight can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days. During inflation, the balloon is filled with helium gas in stages, ensuring optimal performance and stability. Measuring impact, driving change. Our High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellite (HAPS) technology can be a powerful tool for monitoring our planet and driving positive change. HAPS platforms can provide near-continuous surveillance of specific regions or areas of interest, allowing for real-time monitoring of environmental changes, natural disasters, and human activities. By detecting issues promptly, HAPS can facilitate rapid response efforts, such as disaster relief or environmental protection initiatives. HAPS can capture high-resolution imagery, providing detailed information about the Earth's surface. This data can be used to assess deforestation rates, track changes in land use, monitor agricultural practices, and detect illegal activities. The high-quality imagery enables precise measurements of environmental parameters, such as water quality, air pollution levels, and vegetation health. Compared to traditional satellites, HAPS platforms offer a more cost-effective solution for Earth observation. They can operate for extended periods without the need for frequent launches or maintenance. HAPS can be deployed more rapidly and flexibly, making them ideal for monitoring remote or hard-to-reach areas. With B2Space, you can track deforestation rates, monitor pollution levels, and assess the effectiveness of conservation efforts, whilst contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future by monitoring and addressing environmental challenges. #b2space #space #innovation #technology #HAPS #environment

The collaborative research work between Antenna and Microwave Laboratory, SDSU and NASA Glenn Research Center to design a flat-panel 5G Array for Lunar Relay Operations (FIGARO) started in the year 2020, which resulted in the development of two wideband array architectures (https://lnkd.in/g2MCqcnX, https://lnkd.in/g83J-YXq). Last week was the culmination of this work, where four of these arrays were integrated as the payload onboard Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC)'s high-altitude Cyclone (Thunderstrom) balloon, and were flown to 98,000 ft altitude to test live video streaming and tracking between two ground terminals using the payload arrays. The balloon was launched from Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC)'s hangar at Hurley, South Dakota, and the link was established successfully between the ground terminals and the payload. Congratulations to all the team members from NASA Glenn Research Center (Seth Waldstein @BryanL.Schoenholz Taylor Pember @JamesMDowney @SarahMDever, @LaurynNLeslie @MickVKoch) and Antenna and Microwave Laboratory, SDSU (Satish Sharma Sanghamitro Das Nhat Truong) for their hard work and determination to bring it to fruition. Special thanks to Joshua Frock and @Eric Ramsey from Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC) for their continued support throughout this campaign. This paves the way for more future developments as part of NASA's Artemis missions. #aml #amlsdsu #sdsu #antenna #array #phasedarray #aesa #beamforming #beamsteering #active #nasa #nasagrc #ieee #ieeexplore #ieeetap #ieeeaps #satcom #cubesat #satellitecommunications #satellite #wideband #circularpolarized #Aerostarflighttest
