Well done to Georgia, our Research and Grants Manager, for attending a meeting at the Houses of Parliament on the impact of medical research charities in the UK life sciences.
Thank you to the Association of Medical Research Charities for a very inspiring meeting at the Houses of Parliament on the impact of medical research charities in the UK life sciences. AMRC member charities invested over £1.7 billion in medical research in 2023, and I am proud to have contributed to that through our work at Bowel Research UK as we aim to end bowel cancer and bowel disease.

A study funded by Bowel Research UK and NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre has shown ethnic differences in inflammatory bowel disease ➡️ https://lnkd.in/etnxyiTB South Asian patients are more likely to have a certain form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and be diagnosed younger than their white counterparts. Dr Sharmili Balarajah, a Bowel Research UK researcher and gastroenterologist at our Trust, said: “Our current understanding of IBD is primarily derived from studies focused on white populations. Our research is groundbreaking, as it reveals distinct variations in IBD among different ethnic groups, especially South Asians. "By understanding these differences, we can develop more personalised treatment approaches for IBD patients, ensuring that their specific needs are addressed.”

Researchers at St Mark's Hospital are putting together a study on what's important to patients when managing dysplasia or cancer of the bowel. Dysplasia is when there are unusual changes in cells that may become cancerous over time. This new study will look at how people with Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis (IBD), who are at risk of dysplasia or cancer, make decisions between different management options, as well as what risks they are willing to accept to avoid permanent stoma or temporary stoma and pouch. They are looking for people aged 18 years and over who have been diagnosed with either dysplasia or cancer, or who are under regular IBD surveillance to look for these changes (usually after having IBD for over 8 years) to take part in a questionnaire. The questionnaire will take around 15 minutes and you can complete it here: https://lnkd.in/eZuwwDNm #IBD #Crohns #Colitis #Dysplasia #BowelCancer
