Entry-level architecture traineeship providing an alternative & accessible route into a career in the built environment.
About us
Build The Way is an innovative nine-month architecture traineeship aimed at young people from underrepresented groups interested in a career designing buildings, spaces and cities. Its purpose is to provide alternative routes into the industry with the ultimate aim of diversifying the profession to ensure cities are designed by those who inhabit them. Historically a career in architecture relies on being able to fund multiple university degrees and having connections within the industry which reduces its accessibility. We want to challenge conventional routes into the profession and be a part of the debate on architectural education. This paid opportunity offers London Living Wage, with no experience-based barriers to application; places are offered to those who can show a passion for design and cities. The programme introduces the architectural design process, with exposure to real construction projects, and other professionals and consultants involved in making buildings, cities and placemaking. Trainees will receive creative and technical support, with mentorship and career advice from industry professionals. Trainees will also be enrolled at the London School of Architecture’s EPQ (worth up to 28 UCAS points for higher education) which presents the practice of spatial design as a collective endeavour with a focus on context and sustainability. Build The Way C.I.C is a collaboration between HUT, GPAD, Morrow + Lorraine and Shedkm.

We were thrilled to be asked to be a part of this video piece for BusinessLDN. Although in its infancy stage, we're keen to grow our relationship with LSIP and most importantly tackle the skills gap within the built environment with a particular focus on green skills. Thank you GPAD for taking us on site at 130 Old Street and Taking The Pixels for making us feel at ease during the filming. The London Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) sets a blueprint for tackling skills gaps across the capital by bringing together employers, educators and other key stakeholders to match training supply with employer demand. Originally published last year, the LSIP – delivery of which is led by BusinessLDN alongside Central London Forward, South London Partnership, Local London West London Alliance and West London Business, and in partnership with FSB Westminster (Federation of Small Businesses), London Chamber of Commerce and Industry and CBI London – is already starting to have an impact. 📽 Watch our new film about the project to hear from 📽 Katie Wyle of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield West London Retail Skills Hub on how the LSIP supports wide-ranging partnerships. Cara Hodgkins of Build The Way C.I.C on bridging the gap to opportunities in architecture for those with limited exposure to the industry, helping to improve diversity in the sector. Suna Marfé of South Thames College, Tracy Aust of West Thames College and Craig Hurring FRSA of Love Wimbledon Business Improvement District on the LSIP's role in helping training providers to meet business needs. Elizabeth Howard of Quantum Group on rethinking training programmes to suit the requirements of different learners. Adrian Gabriel-Lovell of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on supporting those who have spent time out of the workforce to find new opportunities. And Rikshita Khela of Vorboss on engaging with the LSIP to "shape the future of our workforce". To help 50 students across the country gain valuable insights and take a step closer to their career dreams. Find out more 👇 https://lnkd.in/e_dm3N46 Although I have not personally been involved in the creation of the toolkit, I believe as partitioners and social enterprises working across the sector to inspire young emerging talent, we need to come together more and celebrate our share goals. We have very special project in development with the RIBA for next year to do just that!
