#WorldHomelessDay At Cardboard Citizens, we recognise the various forms of homelessness explored in our recent film series, More Than One Story. These experiences, often overlooked or not recognised as homelessness, include sofa surfing, temporary accommodation, overcrowded living, prison leavers, and those affected by domestic abuse. Today, we’re sharing some shocking statistics about homelessness and poverty in the UK. For everyone to have a decent standard of living, security and stability are essential—this means access to safe housing, a reliable income, and support during tough times. Unfortunately, millions in the UK face insecurity, struggling to improve their living conditions. You can watch our film series and find out more information via the link below. Help us amplify these powerful stories by resharing our films to raise awareness of what it means to be homeless in the UK today. https://lnkd.in/eUfZGfVj

We’re proud to present the final film in our More Than One Story series: This Is What It Means. A rousing chorus for justice, fairness and societal change. “If the people in charge were up to the job, their conscience could never preside over a society that allowed profit margins over people, housing markets over families, data over caring” Written and directed by our Artistic Director and joint CEO, Chris Sonnex, performed by Shahab Awad together with Community Company, this film is a powerful reminder that there is More Than One Story to homelessness. Over the past nine weeks, we’ve explored various forms of homelessness - from street-sleeping and overcrowded living to the hidden struggles of those in the prison system and sofa surfing. We’ve amplified the voices of migrant, LGBTQ+, and Black communities, sharing stories that often go unheard. 242,000 households in the UK are experiencing the most severe forms of homelessness – rough sleeping, living in cars, squats, tents, sofa-surfing, or in temporary and unsuitable accommodation. Over 100,000 households are living in conditions that fail to meet basic needs that’s a larger population than Brixton, Camden, Notting Hill and Hackney combined. These are the stories of what it means to be homeless in the UK today. Cardboard Citizens reposted this
I was lucky enough to have attended a screening of all the short films that form 'More Than One Story' back in July and it was wonderful to see Cardboard Citizens new space as well as catch up with the talented Errol McGlashan who I supported once upon a time as I invited him to join Cardboard Citizens many years ago after he watched a hostel tour performance! I was moved by every single one of the films but found my eyes truly opened by the story of Terry in 'No Walls, Still Trapped' in highlighting the risk of prisoners reoffending when they are released to No Fixed Abode: 'Almost every time, there was a recurring event: someone would get released, give away all their stuff, hug their mates, stick up a middle finger to those they didn’t get along with, and then return after a few months, weeks, or even days.' I urge anyone who hasn't already to watch these incredibly written and performed films to better understand the complexities of #Homelessness and the fact it transcends any single narrative.
Cardboard Citizens and Big Issue are proud to present a new series of short films, More Than One Story, which aims to disrupt stereotypes, generalisations and misconceptions around homelessness in the UK today, as rising numbers of people are unseen, unheard and overlooked. Introducing 7/9 – No Walls, Still Trapped - A story of homelessness and the criminal justice system. Over a game of Scrabble, we hear Terry’s story - a stark reminder of a broken system that shows no signs of change. Written by Errol McGlashan and performed by Michael Quartey “You know it costs about one hundred grand a year to keep an adult in prison and anything up to a quarter of a million a year for a young offender! Compare that with the cost for a pupil at Eton College for example, a measly £46k a year! And whereas Eton turns out world-class leaders, prisons on the other has been called out year after year as ‘an expensive way to make bad people worse” Each year, 50,000 people are released from prison, and more than half are released without settled accommodation. This is a concern because 1 in 3 prison leavers face homelessness or uncertain living conditions. Without a safe place to stay, they are around 50% more likely to reoffend and end up back in prison. Watch 'No Walls, Still Trapped' here now: https://lnkd.in/e5wn5CBq More Than One Story aims to highlight the multiple realities of hidden homelessness in the UK.
