This new publication of thelatest paper on maternal health in PLOS ONE entitled: "Impact of financial risk protection strategies on health outcomes and economic resilience: A study in underserved communities" analyzed over 38,000 antenatal ultrasounds conducted by Doctors for Madagascar, revealing important insights into #maternal_health care access and its challenges in rural and low-resource settings. Despite the critical need for early care, most women only accessed ultrasounds in their third trimester, highlighting a significant gap compared to World Health Organization recommendations for first-trimester screenings. This research underscores the importance of further studies to understand delayed care-seeking behaviors and optimize equity in health service delivery for vulnerable populations. 🎉 Exciting News! 🎉 I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest #maternalhealth paper: "Impact of financial risk protection strategies on health outcomes and economic resilience: A study in underserved communities", in PLOS ONE. In this study, we explored the evidence emerging from over 38,000 antenatal ultrasounds done by Doctors for Madagascar. Our findings highlight that the proportion of foetal and placental pathologies in #Madagascar is consistent with other studies from Sub-Saharan Africa. Most women in our sample only accessed antenatal ultrasound care in their third trimester, especially women from #rural and #lowresource settings. This contrasts with the current #WHO recommendation of conducting antenatal ultrasounds in resource-constrained settings in the first trimester. More #research is needed to understand the reasons for this delayed care seeking and to optimise #equity in #servicedelivery for vulnerable populations. I am deeply grateful to my co-authors, collaborators, and the whole Doctors for Madagascar research team! Dr. Franziska Krätzig M.Sc.
