Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming a brilliant group that brings together a new generation of ocean change agents, the Edinburgh Ocean Leaders. The mission of the Edinburgh Ocean Leaders program is to have a lasting impact on the health of our marine environments by accelerating the leadership, influence and reach of exceptional professionals working on solutions for the oceans and society. Invited by MARE-Madeira / João Canning Clode the largest non-profit marine research institute in Madeira, part of the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE), the group visit included a dive in our Garajau marine reserve, a tour in our sustainability winner hotel Sentido Galomar with our Technical Services and Sustainability Director, João Aragão and Operations Manager David Andrade and finally a delicious lunch by the sea where we got to share our experiences regarding the sustainable use of ocean resources. Thank you for the opportunity to share experiences, knowledge and thoughts we were truly honoured to have you with us. #edinburghoceanleaders2024 #sentidogaloresort #sentidogalomar #sustainability #DERTOUR #Visitmadeira

🤩 Congratulations 2023 Ocean Leader João Canning Clode for being recognised as Elsevier's top 2% of the world's scientists in terms of scientific impact.
Principal Investigator, MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, ARDITI Chair of ICES Expert Group Edinburgh Ocean Leader
WOW! TOP 2%....in the world...!!! Honoured to be recognized for the first time among the top 2% of the world's scientists in terms of scientific impact, according to Elsevier! 🎉 This achievement is particularly meaningful as it comes at the end of a challenging year filled with political bumps. Despite the hurdles, this recognition probably means we are on the right path—pushing forward and continuing to contribute to the field of #MarineSciences in #Madeira and #Portugal. Of course, this is not a solo accomplishment. I want to extend a huge thanks to my amazing team at MARE-Madeira ARDITI - Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação Tecnologia e Inovação Universidade da Madeira - UMa for their dedication, resilience, and constant support. Let’s keep pushing! Let's keep moving forward, making a positive impact, and striving to advance scientific research! 🌍 #Top2Percent #ScienceImpact #Resilience #TeamWork #MarineResearch #MAREMadeira

That’s a wrap for #ClimateWeekNYC! 🍏 We were thrilled to see the Edinburgh Ocean Leader network actively advocating for ocean health in climate conversations throughout the city. One ocean highlight was a panel convened by Edinburgh Ocean Leader Co-Director Meriwether Wilson at The Yale Club of New York City. She was joined by experts Dr Lisa Suatoni (Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)), Sam Teicher (Coral Vita), Peter Bryant (Builders Vision) and Dr Marea Hatziolos (The World Bank). Together, they explored innovative ocean strategies that will vital for the future of our planet. As we navigate the climate crisis, these experts reminded us that the ocean is crucial to developing effective solutions. #EdinburghOceanLeaders #Ocean #Climate

🌍Conservation Leadership🌱 A nice research review of 662 site-based conservation projects from 102 countries further verifies what we hold as a core value at Planet Indonesia - when local leadership of conservation is put at the center the "likelihood of achieving social and conservation outcomes is far higher." The authors found "the role of IPs & LCs ranges from exclusion to partial involvement as participants, stakeholders, or partners, and through to primary or complete control over governance of an ecosystem or landscape" and the further you move towards complete control, the more "[likely] to achieve positive social and conservation outcomes." The study also uncovers persistent inequalities in knowledge production, with a disproportionate amount of research on site-based conservation below the equator lead by authors in the Global North. The findings underscore the importance of decolonizing conservation practices by centering IPs & LCs in decision-making processes.
