As a company committed to #techrepair and #sustainability, we’ve been thrilled to contribute to this inspiring project. Special shout out to our part-time student technicians—engineering students at UWE—have represented us with great enthusiasm. Loki Campbell, Sai Charan Sangaru, and Parshva Purohit have actively participated in workshops and repair activities, bringing their skills and passion to every session. A huge thank you to Kat Corbett for giving us the chance to be part of something so meaningful. Seeing Black Friday Sales Everywhere?  🛍️ Exciting? Absolutely! Who doesn’t love a great deal? But with every sale, there’s a bigger picture to consider. Endless sales drive endless demand. And endless demand fuels continuous production. That’s where the problem lies. The truth is, the real cost of Black Friday goes beyond our wallets—it takes a toll on the planet. It’s not like Black Friday itself is bad—we love it as much as anyone else. But it gives us a moment to pause and reflect—not just on our behavior as consumers but on our mindset as consumers. Here’s the challenge: The Throwaway Culture We’ve been conditioned to upgrade, replace, and discard without often considering the consequences. New stuff, even when we don’t need it, feels irresistible—especially at 1,000,000% off. But this mindset is costing us more than money; it’s driving the #ewaste crisis and harming the #environment 🌱 . Imagine if we shifted this mindset, focusing more on #repairing what we already have or investing in items that are built to last? This simple change could have a huge impact on reducing waste and conserving resources. While that’s not entirely off-base, the reality is that this issue hits closer to home than we often acknowledge. If we’re in the habit of carelessly using our gadgets or replacing our old devices at the first hint of a new release (thanks, Apple!), we’re not doing the planet any favors. Last month, our #tech initiative focused on #recycling, and it got us thinking: raising awareness about e-waste isn’t just about recycling tech at the end of its life. It actually starts much earlier—it starts way before, when the device is being bought or still in use. This week, the FixMyTek team was thrilled to be invited by the Sustainability Team at the School of Engineering - UWE Bristol, to run a #TechRepairWorkshop in partnership with the MAKERS Project and Kat Corbett MAKERS stands for "Making and Knowledge Exchange for Repair and Sustainability" - https://lnkd.in/g4FZhM6z, empowers students and staff to reduce waste through hands-on repair, upcycling, and collaboration. By creating a space to fix and repurpose, it helps everyone embrace a more #sustainablelifestyle —keeping items in use, saving resources, and picking up a few new skills along the way. It was fantastic to see so many #students and staff join us, bringing in their own devices that needed fixing or working on electronics nearing the end of their life cycle. Basically, we were all about saving them 🪛 ! At FixMyTek, training students in electrical engineering is one of our key focuses. Our technicians in the workshop are also students from University of Bristol and University of the West of England, working alongside their peers and learning together. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun, with everyone interested in #techrepairs hanging out, watching tutorials, getting things fixed, and enjoying some delicious snacks from the sustainability team (a special thanks for that 😇). Some of the unique items participants worked on included: the brush roll of a vacuum cleaner, a charging adaptor with a burned-out fault 🔌⚡ , a broken iron that wouldn’t heat up nor light up 🤔, and a very stubborn hair dryer! In just a few hours, we saved an estimated 4.15 kilograms of e-waste 🙌 . Imagine if more people made a habit of trying to get #tech repaired first before replacing it—it would make a huge difference 🌱! Looking ahead, we’re excited for more collaborations like this. This #InternationalTechRepairDay, let’s rethink how we handle our tech. 💻 When we consider buying a new device, how often do we pause to think that #Recycling or #Repairing the old one could be better for the planet? 🤔 This International Tech Repair Day is all about that for FixMyTek. We want to use this opportunity to raise awareness about the #SustainabilityChallenges in the #TechIndustry, particularly regarding the growing demand for new products and the mishandling of old devices. What happens to the devices we no longer need? Do they sit in our drawers for years, or worse, end up in landfills, releasing toxins, and harming the environment? As business leaders and individuals, it’s crucial for us to reflect on this issue. Sadly, the UK is the second-largest e-waste producer per capita, contributing significantly to the global problem (Check out the stats: https://shorturl.at/Nqe5m) We understand that as #TechRepairBusiness the idea of #Sustainability go far beyond planting more trees (though we love doing that with each repair we take in!). Every effort counts, and at FixMyTek, we’re focused on making tech repair as eco-friendly as we can. That means improving how we handle repairs—using greener products, refurbishing and reusing devices, and ensuring all tech waste is responsibly recycled. (That’s our big picture summed up in a few words) That is why, to better handle #TechWaste this International Tech Repair Day, we’ve launched a fun initiative for our community at University of Bristol and University of the West of England. This week, we had an absolute blast setting up the shop banners and adding the final touches as we continue our journey as FixMyTek. It’s been a long time coming, but transforming our corner at the ASSL University of Bristol into a vibrant work space has been so exciting, and our team had a great time doing it (as you can tell from the pictures). Having the opportunity to share this space with the University IT and Library teams took years of persistence, dedication, and relationship-building from Casey Sather, Ishaan Chauhan and the team. Seeing it all come together has been incredibly satisfying for us all. We’re excited to share some snapshots of how the shop and team look together (something amazing, like the Avengers assembling 🙂↔️). We’re all set to support both students and businesses alike with their tech needs 🌏🪛Big steps towards sustainability Since we started off as FixMyTek (formerly known as FixMyCrack) around September, we’ve tackled over 200 tech troubles and provided dozens #refurbished devices in just one month, which translated to approximately 17,000 kilograms of #CO2Emissions reduction on our part, making our approach to #sustainability even stronger 🙌 . Handling tech repair requirements isn’t just what we do as a business; we’re all about creating a collective impact. We’re focused on taking tech repairs beyond just quality and quick fixes. As more #businesses, #charities, and #universities join us, it’s a chance for us to give tech a new life and reduce environmental waste, all while offering training to students regarding tech repair. Every device repaired in workshops around the world helps keep electronics out of landfills, minimizing harmful emissions and contributing to a healthier planet. We were digging through our photo gallery and stumbled upon some fun pics from our days as BrisFix and FixMyCrack, helping students with their tech issues at University of Bristol and University of the West of England. It’s been awesome to see how far we’ve come as a team, supporting the student community all along the way. By the way, did you know that Casey Sather, our CEO, started the business 10 years ago as “Amersham iPhone Repairs” while still in school? Interestingly, it seems that no logo from that time has survived!  🤔 A decade in the making, and now we’ve evolved into FixMyTek.
