Flotation Energy Ltd delivers clean, green, renewable energy by using our expertise in floating and fixed offshore wind and the energy transition, supporting achievement of carbon-neutral commitments.
Perhaps best known for our involvement in Kincardine – the world’s largest grid connected floating offshore windfarm; our team has progressed from pioneering demonstrator energy transition and floating offshore wind projects to delivering fast-tracked commercial scale offshore wind and energy transition projects.
Flotation Energy is in a strong position to make use of its unique combination of experience, expertise, and insight in offshore wind to identify and develop fixed and floating offshore wind projects. Our business model is to identify offshore wind energy prospects in key target markets and progress these through the complex development process to full scale commercial projects that minimise risk and maximise value.
Our existing portfolio of projects in development includes fixed bottom offshore windfarms (480MW Morecambe; 1200 MW Greystones; 1,500 MW Seadragon) and floating offshore windfarms (100MW White Cross, 1,500 MW Blackwater and up to 500 MW Green Volt).
Flotation Energy plc was established in 2018 by Allan MacAskill and Nicol Stephen. We have offices in the UK (Scotland), Australia, Taiwan and Japan.
Our Energy Offtake Manager Claire Tindle talks to Offshore Energies UK about our pioneering floating wind project #GreenVolt, which we're developing with our joint venture partner Vårgrønn and what it's like to work one of the most significant oil and gas decarbonisation projects in the UKCS right now.

Claire Tindle is the Energy Offtake Manager at Flotation Energy , the offshore wind developer based in Edinburgh.
Claire is working on the Green Volt project, the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm, developed with Vårgrønn. Set to be operational in 2029, it will provide clean energy to the UK and help decarbonize North Sea oil and gas assets by electrifying their power systems with wind energy.
Alongside our joint venture partner Vårgrønn, we have awarded front-end engineering and design (FEED) Phase 1 contracts to two sets of leading engineering companies; Aker Solutions and ABB and Aibel and Hitachi Energy.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the news as he announced that the UK and Norway are joining forces to seize green industrial opportunities. The PM said “The Green Volt windfarm is a prime example of how the UK and Norway can work together to move away from fossil fuels and deliver clean, secure energy for millions of households up and down the country.
“I welcome this announcement as we deliver our Plan For Change to secure home-grown energy, protect billpayers, and put us on track to make Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030.”
The new FEED contracts cover preparation for the complete project including engineering, procurement and construction of topside and jacket, system design and design of the electrical infrastructure such as power to oil and gas assets and to shore.

It was great to be at Scottish Renewables’ Energy Breakfast this week to connect with interested Members of the Scottish Parliament and explain how our Cenos and Green Volt Projects - being delivered with our joint venture partner Vårgrønn - are helping meet Scotland’s sustainable energy goals.
In the recent report from the joint government-industry UK Floating Offshore Wind Task Force, floating offshore wind was identified as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the UK. It's estimated that by 2050, the industry could employ 100,000 people and contribute £47 billion to the UK economy.

We are very proud to have been shortlisted as finalists across three categories at the #RUKAwards24 in London last night.
Hosted by RenewableUK, the Global Offshore Wind Awards celebrate the growth, innovation, and vibrancy of the offshore wind sector, both in the UK and globally.
Victoria Crossland, Consent Manager was recognised in the Unsung Hero Award as highly commended, for her tireless dedication to our pioneering Green Volt project.
In the category Offshore Wind Project of the Year (Non-Operational), Green Volt – developed with our joint venture partner Vårgrønn, was also recognised on a project level as highly commended.
These industry endorsed commendations are tribute to the exceptional efforts of our team and the progress made by Green Volt floating offshore windfarm over the last 12 months.
Congratulations to all the finalists, acknowledged as leading innovators in the dynamic offshore wind sector.

We are delighted to announce that, along with our joint venture partner Vårgrønn, we have selected Aberdeen as the strategic and operational headquarters for our £2.5bn Green Volt project.
This paves the way for the development of Europe's first commercial-scale floating offshore windfarm in North East Scotland. Up to 40 direct jobs will be based at Green Volt’s new HQ in the Granite City, which is expected to trigger around £2.5bn of investment and deliver 2,800 jobs.
Nicol Stephen, Chief Executive of Flotation Energy said:
“Green Volt is a trailblazing, multibillion pound floating offshore wind project which will kickstart jobs and investment by companies right across the UK offshore supply chain. The choice of our HQ in Aberdeen is clear evidence of our strong commitment to support local jobs and businesses wherever possible.”
Aberdeen was selected for its world-renowned expertise, innovation and its status as home to the largest concentration of subsea supply chain companies in Europe, making it a natural choice for this key energy infrastructure project.
The news comes as 10 Downing Street announces thousands of jobs across the green industries, welcoming more than £24 billion of private investment for pioneering energy projects, including Green Volt, ahead next week’s International Investment Summit.

The second and final day of #FloatingWind24 included our presentation of Norwegian Offshore Wind’s FWD Floating Wind Award.
Announced as award winners by the Norwegian State Secretary for Energy back in May at the FWD industry flagship event in Haugesund, it was a real privilege for our team to be presented with the accolade at Floating Offshore Wind ’24.
Collected by Alexander Quayle CEng FIMechE, Project Director for Green Volt, the award highlights the hard work our teams are pouring in to drive forward the scaling of floating wind in the UK and through our project pipeline, across other markets around the world.
As included in the Floating Offshore Wind Taskforce report, published by UK Government and industry earlier this week – FOW is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that by 2050 could employ a 100,000 people and contribute £47 billion to the UK economy. In short, the time is now.
Thank you to Norwegian Offshore Wind, Caroline Whittle, Monica Bårdsen
