📢 The first records have been added to the #SpawnSurvey! Spawn was spotted in a garden pond in St Mary’s on the Isles of Scilly on 21st December. This sighting was quickly followed by two in Cornwall, one in a pond and one in a ditch, as well as another sighting in Devon. 🐸 Sightings submitted from people across the UK help to improve our understanding of when and where frogs and toads are breeding, and are invaluable for wildlife conservation. Where will the next sighting be? 👀 Keep an eye out for spawn emerging near you, and don't forget to record your sightings using our survey form and share your photos with us! 🌿 Growing up on a farm and spending time in the countryside inspired an interest in nature and wildlife for Harry Bowler. Since then, he has been interested in how productive farming and nature recovery can go hand in hand. In a recent interview, Harry met with our Conservation Officer Paola Perez to talk about his Oxfordshire farm and experience of working with Freshwater Habitats Trust to create new habitats where nature can thrive. 🦋 Read the interview here: https://lnkd.in/eYV32i7h We are proud that this work is part of the #NatureReturns programme led by Natural England in close partnership with the Environment Agency, Forestry England and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Wakehurst. Nature Returns is bringing together scientists, communities and investors to demonstrate how nature recovery leads to tangible returns in the form of carbon sequestration and increased biodiversity. Nature Returns is a Shared Outcomes Fund Programme sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

"It's really amazing how rich and wonderful these ponds are." 💙 Did you see our CEO Professor Jeremy Biggs on Countryfile yesterday evening? He was interviewed by John Craven at Pinkhill Meadow, a Thames Water site in Oxfordshire. Freshwater Habitats Trust and partners developed a pond complex here in 1990, and over the last 35 years we've created more new ponds to restore a historic floodplain. The site is fantastically biodiverse, with 20% of all of Britain’s wetland plant species and 20% of freshwater invertebrate species found here. It is also home to Water Vole, Otter and a strong Common Toad community. Pinkhill Meadow is thought to be the most monitored pond creation site in Europe and is an incredible example of how small waterbodies can contribute to nature’s recovery. Jeremy explains how Pinkhill is one of the richest places for freshwater wildlife in the country and has helped us to understand just how important ponds are for biodiversity. Even in the depths of winter, there is so much life under the surface. You can watch the episode here: https://lnkd.in/e9A7mQTN
