🌲To tree or not to tree?🌲 It's time to face the yearly question, what is the better option when it comes to choosing a tree: real, long-lasting artificial, or alternative? To help resolve this annual dilemma, we dig into some of the pro's and con's in our latest blog. Here are a few insights from the blog: → Real: How many of us think about disposal of real trees? Did you know that a tree in landfill emits 16kgCO2 whereas composting reduces it to 3.5kg. → Artificial: The manufacturing process can result in emissions (e.g. a PVC tree results in 48kg CO2) but can they be eco-friendly if reused (I've had mine for 20 years). → Eco-Alternatives: Use a potted alternative, rent a tree (cyclical economy), craft a tree from recycled materials. If you have an eco-alternative, why not let us know or post your suggestion below. It's not always simple to change our habits but we need to try! Season's Greetings to everyone! 🔗 Read the full blog: https://lnkd.in/ePdBNt6j #Sustainability #EcoFriendlyHolidays #ClimateAction #Gentian #Christmas

World Soil Day 2024 🌏 This week, we recognize the essential role of soil in sustaining life on Earth. Endorsed by the United Nations and FAO, World Soil Day highlights the urgent need to protect and manage this finite resource responsibly. Healthy soil is the foundation of biodiversity, agriculture, and climate resilience. Why is Soil Vital? → Food Security: 95% of our food depends on healthy soil. → Climate Action: Stores 2,500 gigatons of carbon. → Biodiversity: A habitat for countless organisms. → Water Filtration: Reduces erosion and improves water quality. Yet, soil is disappearing 10x faster than it can regenerate. In places like China and India, the rate is up to 40x faster. Without action, soil degradation threatens food security, ecosystems, and livelihoods. Why Is Soil Disappearing? → Erosion: From deforestation and poor farming. → Urbanization: Cities cover fertile land. → Unsustainable Practices: Overuse of chemicals and monocropping. → Climate Change: Extreme weather accelerates loss. Did you know? → A teaspoon of healthy soil contains up to 1 billion microorganisms fungi, and protozoa. → It takes 1,000 years to form 1 inch of topsoil because it depends on the slow breakdown of rocks into minerals, accumulation of organic material, and microbial activity—all of which occur over centuries. → Soil acts as a natural water filter, purifying water as it moves through and improving its quality for drinking, while also reducing pollutants in rivers and streams. Take action → Support sustainable farming. → Advocate for soil conservation policies. → Compost or plant native vegetation to reduce erosion. This December, let’s commit to protecting soil—our planet’s lifeline. #WorldSoilDay #Sustainability #SoilHealth #ClimateAction #Gentian

🌳 As National Tree Week 2024 draws to a close, we’re reminded of the incredible role trees play in shaping ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and combating climate change. At Gentian, we leverage advanced satellite imagery and AI to map and monitor trees with precision, helping organizations assess forest cover, urban greenery, and biodiversity uplift. Our tools empower decision-makers with actionable insights to protect and restore these vital ecosystems. Dr. Olga Tutubalina, our Remote Sensing Senior Expert, shares: "As we reflect on the power of trees to nurture biodiversity, it’s essential to ensure their sustainable management. The Forestry Statistics 2024 report, from Forest Research, highlights the progress made in woodland expansion and the importance of using precise data to track these efforts. At Gentian, we are proud to contribute to such efforts by equipping organizations with tools to monitor the impact of conservation initiatives." https://lnkd.in/eXnHyvj6 Key findings from Forestry Statistics 2024 reveal: → Woodland cover in the UK has reached 3.24 million hectares, representing 13% of the land area. → Over 9,000 hectares of new woodland were created across the UK in 2023/24. → Scotland leads in afforestation, accounting for nearly 75% of the UK’s new woodland planting. This National Tree Week, let’s celebrate not only the trees we plant but also the innovations that enable us to protect and nurture the woodlands that sustain our world. Visit www.gentian.io to learn more about our mission to empower organizations to understand the truth about nature. #NationalTreeWeek #Biodiversity #TreesMatter #GentianTrueNature

Enterprise Tuesday 26 Nov: Thank you to our Chair Christian Bunke 🇺🇦, CEO and Founder of Basck, and guest panelists Olga Tutubalina, Senior Remote Sensing expert at Gentian; Georgina Steele MEng, Co-founder and CTO of a climate startup; and Anil Madhavapeddy, Professor of Planetary Computing, University of Cambridge. Our panel discussed how #entrepreneurs have the opportunity to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) in order to contribute positively to the environment and promote social and sustainable practices. There was a lively Q&A session with our audience. Congratulations to Annie YF Loo MBA PhD CEng MIET (pictured below holding her prize) who won a copy of the book 'Power and Progress' by Acemoglu and Johnson (winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize for Economics) for her question: How can AI support circular economies? Here are some of the answers given by our speakers: Georgina Steele MEng highlighted the need for policy-driven sustainability strategies, highlighting the need for companies to address the end-of-life stage of their products, a crucial yet underdeveloped area in existing policy frameworks. Anil Madhavapeddy used the example of the complex sustainability decisions of free-range and battery-farmed chickens, emphasising the importance of data, policies, and circular supply chains to balance local moral and regulatory contexts with global environmental considerations. Olga Tutubalina shared after the event that she advocated for sustainable forestry practices, like tree thinning, to enhance ground biodiversity, support native species, restore salmon habitats, and improve long-term wood productivity. Olga emphasised that restoration is crucial to counteract the environmental degradation and resource depletion caused by unsustainable forestry.  Thanks to all for your contributions to the session. Enterprise Tuesday is open to all and free to attend. Join us again in February 2025. 🌍 #COP29: Honoring Indigenous Peoples' Role in Biodiversity Conservation As COP29 Azerbaijan draws to a close, today’s focus is on #Indigenous Peoples and their vital contributions to global biodiversity. Indigenous communities protect 80% of the world’s biodiversity and 36% of intact forest landscapes, making their role essential to conservation. This year’s discussions call for increased support for Indigenous territories under the Global Biodiversity Framework’s #30x30 Target—a commitment to protect 30% of land and waters by 2030, with a human-rights-based approach. At Gentian, we proudly stand alongside Indigenous communities, advocating for solutions that respect traditional knowledge. We’re honored to support the Salmon Parks initiative, led by the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (#MMFN), to conserve salmon habitats on Vancouver Island. Leveraging advanced mapping and satellite imagery, Gentian provided precise habitat data that strengthens MMFN’s #conservation strategies, protecting these vital ecosystems from industrial impact. A high-level roundtable on “Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities’ (#IPLCs) traditional knowledge at the core of the climate-nature nexus” is also being held today. The discussions aim to explore ways to integrate traditional knowledge into climate policies and ensure Indigenous rights are protected as part of a just and inclusive approach to tackling climate change. Learn more about these vital conversations here: https://lnkd.in/dJiy67wT #COP29 #IndigenousConservation #Biodiversity #SalmonParks #Gentian
