  • Welcome to this week’s GEL post, and today we are talking all about the educational initiatives and events that we offer. From school assemblies and careers fairs to taught lessons, site visits and university talks – we really do cover all bases here at GEL to make sure that everyone has access to learning about geothermal energy. Read on and follow us to find out more. Our Community Engagement and Education Officer, Claudia M., details our educational offerings below: “A large part of community cohesion is education. At GEL we take our time ensuring that our project’s aims and impacts are understood throughout communities, and a large part of that is done via our educational visits. The community engagement and education team regularly visit schools and colleges giving lessons, presentations and speaking in assemblies. GEL has put together lesson plans on geothermal, geology and seismicity that involve a presentation, animations to suit a variety of audiences, a range of activities and games, and a Q&A session. These lessons are suitable for mixed-abilities and can be tailored to fit the needs of the class and the curriculum. GEL education resources encourage learning while having fun, they also help students to learn geothermal related terminology, GEL has maze puzzles to demonstrate how water moves through the fracture zone, a board game, matching pairs, word searches and more! Plenty to keep pupils engaged and learning about science, and renewable energy. We also regularly attend school events such as career fairs and mock interviews to provide support and give the students a chance to exercise their communication skills, whilst learning about new and growing industries in Cornwall. We can also host site visits for school, college and university groups. Held in our visitor centre, we can accommodate 10-35 people and run a range of lessons and bespoke activities, they also get to see the 1st UK geothermal power plant! For more information or to book a visit email Claudia.malam@geothermalengineering.co.uk” Follow us to make sure you don’t miss any of our weekly topic posts, and to keep up to date with the exciting developments happening here at United Downs over the coming months! #GEL #Geothermalenergy #Greenerandcleaner #Communityengagement #Education #Cornwallschools #Schoolvisits #Cornwallcareersfair

  • HAPPY WORLD GEOTHERMAL DAY! A day filled with geothermal education, sharing inspiring geothermal projects from around the globe, highlighting the astounding benefits of geothermal energy and celebrating geothermal energy, and the people who make it happen – what could be better?! So today is a slightly different post. To celebrate this special day, we want to share a snapshot into the world of geothermal energy and condense 16 years’ worth of hard work into a 5-minute educational read. What is Geothermal Energy? Geothermal energy is a form of renewable energy derived from the Earth’s natural heat; the term ‘geothermal’ literally meaning "heat from the Earth". It is a reliable source of low-carbon heat and energy. Why Geothermal Energy? Our founder, Ryan Law, had the following to say when asked why he decided to develop the first geothermal power project in the UK: “Geothermal energy has such tremendous potential to provide renewable energy 24/7. The resource is enormous, and I wanted to show that geothermal power could also be developed in a country such as the UK. We are at the beginning of a broader roll out of geothermal projects worldwide as there will be a need to ensure that power needs are still met when the sun doesn’t shine, or the wind doesn’t blow. Onwards and downwards.” Geothermal energy has, but is not limited to, the following benefits: ·      Low carbon ·      Low environmental impact ·      Constant supply – geothermal plants operate 24/7 regardless of the weather conditions ·      Provides a multitude of jobs in the green energy sector ·      Improves national energy security ·      Decarbonises electricity generation ·      Only uses a small area of land to generate power ·      Each site offers numerous local benefits including a net increase in biodiversity, local talks and events and money spent in local businesses to boost local economy ·      No visible steam or smell emitted, unlike a traditional power plant Our Geothermal Vision: At GEL we have a clear vision for the future of geothermal energy. GEL is producing the UK’s first geothermal power plant, which will be switched on in 2025. This is a huge step towards creating energy independence for Britain and making valuable steps towards the global energy transition. Our continued vision is to use the geothermal resources beneath our feet for zero carbon electricity, heating and cooling. As a company built by a community of like-minded people with a passion for sustainable endeavours, we believe that geothermal should fill the gap for 24/7 renewable energy production, regardless of the weather. We would like to hear your thoughts and stories surrounding geothermal energy to celebrate World Geothermal Day! Tag us in your World Geothermal Day posts or leave us a comment below. Let’s celebrate this day together! Follow us to be a part of our journey to becoming the UK’s first geothermal power plant. #WorldGeothermalDay #Geothermalenergy #GEL #Greenenergy

  • It’s time for this week’s GEL post, and this week we are covering all aspects of our community engagement and outreach initiatives relating to the surrounding communities. Engaging with the communities local to our sites is inherently important to us, and we aim to ensure all members feel listened to, reassured and informed regarding our developments. Here at GEL, we participate in and host a variety of events for the local community. These include regular Community Liaison Group (CLG) meetings, community funding for local projects, site visits for those who wish to, Open Days available for all and participation in local events such as fairs and coffee mornings. Our Community Engagement and Education Manager, Jane Charman, delves into more detail with regards to our involvement within the community: “GEL has always appreciated the importance of community Engagement and the need to have a visible presence locally for two-way communication. Our presence at local community events, giving talks and presentations, as well as opening the site to visitors has enabled over 10,000 people to learn about geothermal power production and the geology in Cornwall.   Inclusivity is paramount, ensuring that information about geothermal power projects is accessible to all. GEL has taken time and care to formulate digital and printed information with just the right balance of technical and non-technical information in text and graphical format. Presentations are tailored for each audience, often including one of our bespoke animations and footage from the drilling and well-testing phases. Groups of 10 – 35 people can book visits to our United Downs site, or the Community Engagement team can visit groups in Cornwall taking along our mobile exhibition resources.   The United Downs Community Liaison Group meets regularly in the site visitor room, bringing together councilors, local businesses, and members of the community to hear from GEL representatives and for them to ask questions, and see the progress being made from the viewing platform.   A Community Fund was launched when drilling began, which has fully or partially funded 14 local projects all of which have either encouraged community cohesion or enhanced local sustainability. Plaques have been presented to each of the funded projects which help to promote GEL inclusivity in the community. Cornwall Community Foundation” Follow us to make sure you don’t miss any of our weekly topic posts, and to keep up to date with the exciting developments happening here at United Downs over the coming months! Next week’s post will also cover our community engagement initiatives but will focus on the education aspects of this. #GEL #UnitedDowns #Geothermalenergy #UKgreenenergy #Greenerandcleaner #Communityengagement #GELcommunity
