Did you know that all the decking and islands at Eden Dock float within the dock? Using a combination of innovative buoyancy connectors, they are either fully floating or hinged back to the dock edge for stability. Designed by Howells, with landscape architecture by HTA Design for the Canary Wharf Group, Eden Dock is a pioneering public space set within the Grade I listed 19th-century dock. The floating boardwalks form an accessible public route, connecting a sequence of floating gardens, an education pontoon, and terraces for social and cultural use. The islands lead to an open-water swimming area, offering spectacular setting for recreation. Below the water, a cantilevered shelf supports aquatic planting, while a marine monitoring station, complete with underwater cameras, tracks biodiversity and provides an engaging educational feature. We're excited to share our first collaboration with Greencore Homes, a client that is both the developer and offsite manufacturer of Milton Heights. Milton Heights, which recently got planning permission, reuses brownfield land, utilising existing vehicle access and hard-standing areas to protect the mature woodland that frames the site. By minimising roads and car space, we've incorporated biodiversity improvements and a network of sustainable drainage. In addition, we integrated a play trail and nature walk, opening up this beautiful setting for the surrounding community to enjoy Each home is designed with carefully arranged windows and doors around the perimeter, ensuring every home has its own front door, even for the flats. Homes vary in cladding, roof orientation, window frames, and doors to provide individuality. The homes are built with Greencore's Biond panel, a closed timber frame insulated with natural materials from sustainable forests, offering low embodied carbon. Paired with triple glazing, heat recovery ventilation, and solar photovoltaics, these homes are energy-efficient and targeted for 100% renewable energy. Simon Toplis, Partner at HTA Design said: "This is a significant milestone in the delivery of a new climate positive neighbourhood that’s putting connection and community at the centre of its regenerative development. Our design for Milton Heights puts the existing landscape and ecology first, to create a site framed by generous open spaces and new wooded connections. Through this, our proposal welcomes the surrounding community in, all while supporting a biodiverse and climate resilient future." #architecture #planningapproval #sustainability #landscapedesign

This week HTA welcomed ALLISON & BUSBY publishing and Jenny Brown Associates for the paperback launch of Flora Johnston’s The Paris Peacemakers. In conversation with Lisa Highton, Flora explored the research and inspiration behind her WW1 novel. Initially conceptualised when sorting through family letters and discovering the history of her great aunt, The Paris Peacemakers follows the lives of three young Scots who are piecing their lives together in the fallout of WW1. The novel considers how women carved out new spaces for themselves after the roles they filled during the war defaulted back to the returning soldiers. Flora Johnston lives in Edinburgh and The Paris Peacemakers is her second novel. Her love of Scottish history began at St Andrews University and has spanned working at the National Museum of Scotland and a career in heritage interpretation. Lisa Highton is the Founder and Publisher of Two Roads, an imprint of John Murray Press/Hachette where she published authors including Kirsty Wark, Sally Magnusson, Monty Don, Ruth Hogan, Janet Skeslien Charles, Guinevere Glasfurd, Janet Ellis, Sarah Haywood, Susan Calman and Wendy Cope. HTA Design recently completed the second phase of South Quay Plaza for Berkeley Homes, transforming a long-vacant site at South Dock and Millwall Cutting on the Isle of Dogs. The masterplan introduces 3 acres of public green space on a 4.5-acre site with three new residential buildings, revitalising a plot that had been closed to the public for over 20 years. Since 2015, HTA Landscape Team have been involved in optimising the site by using slender building footprints and relocating all vehicular servicing underground, reclaiming over two-thirds of the site as car-free public realm. The team also designed three themed communal terraces on levels 18, 37, and 55 of the second tower, appearing as green ribbons along the façade with tree planting on all elevations for vertical greening. The terraces include a bamboo sanctuary with an outdoor spa, an iGarden for workspaces, and a sky meadow with social areas and panoramic views. The project has transformed the area into a flourishing piece of biodiverse parkland with waterside gardens and over 320 mature trees achieving 500% biodiversity net gain, repairing the urban fabric and forging new pedestrian and cyclist connections through the Isle of Dogs. The wider team: Berkeley Group Plc Maylim Our Landscape team is currently recruiting! In a pioneering partnership with the Eden Project, Eden Dock in Canary Wharf has been transformed into a unique waterfront oasis that connects nature and people. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how our initial sketches have turned into this incredible space that people enjoy, and wildlife can thrive in” Kexin Zhu, Landscape Architect. The design introduces innovative floating gardens, linked by pontoons and boardwalks. Planted with native species including perennials, shrubs, and trees, these islands provide valuable habitats for invertebrates, amphibians, fish, and waterfowl. Incorporating freshwater swimming with recreation and respite space, Eden Dock welcomes visitors and residents to spend time amongst nature. HTA worked in close collaboration with Canary Wharf Group, Howells and the wider design team, to deliver a ground-breaking new public realm within the Grade I listed, 19th-century dock.
