The future of conservation is digital. DNA sequencing technologies are at the forefront of this shift, providing groundbreaking methods to guide conservation practices and policy. From the translocation of endangered species to identifying genetic vulnerabilities, DNA technologies allow us to make data-driven decisions to protect biodiversity. In a Q&A session we sat down with IBC's Associate Chiara Bortoluzzi to discuss how genomic data could transform applied conservation and ecology, the current challenges of rolling out these methods for widespread application, and the benefits to businesses in commissioning DNA technology services from expert consultancies. ## Partnering for a Sustainable Amazon: International Biodiversity Consultants Ltd's contribution to World Bank Bioeconomies initiative The Amazon rainforest stands as Earth's crown jewel of biodiversity and the world's largest tropical forest ecosystem. At IBC, we are proud to be contributing our expertise to the groundbreaking Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program, a decade-long initiative managed by the World Bank that is transforming conservation efforts across this crucial biome. ## The Amazon's Critical Role The Amazon's importance cannot be overstated. Spanning eight countries, this dynamic ecosystem: - Regulates and maintains rainfall patterns - Serves as a crucial carbon sink - Provides essential environmental benefits for local communities - Supports global climate stability ## A Landmark Conservation Initiative The Global Environment Facility's #AmazonSustainableLandscapes Program represents a historic collaboration, marking the first time all eight Amazon nations have united toward a common conservation goal. The progam is working alongside prestigious partners including CAF, WWF, FAO, UNDP, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), UNIDO, and Conservation International, to achieved remarkable results: ✅ Protected an area equivalent to Panama ✅ Prevented carbon emissions equal to 18 million vehicles ✅ Directly benefited 32,000 local community members ## Addressing Current Challenges At the UN Biodiversity #COP16 in #Cali, Colombia, representatives from across the Amazon are discussing crucial next steps. The urgency of the work has been highlighted by recent severe droughts affecting the region, impacting: - Ecosystem health - Wildlife populations - Local livelihoods - Community mobility and access to essential services ## Looking Forward As noted by Claude Gascon, GEF Director of Programs: "The last two years have been very dramatic. We are at about 80 percent forest cover. We need to maintain not just the forest cover but the rivers, and work together towards getting Amazonia on a pathway to a different, more sustainable model of economic and social development." At IBC Ltd, we're committed to supporting this vision through our continued partnership with our partners and regional stakeholders. Our expertise in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development positions us uniquely to contribute to this vital initiative. --- Follow us to stay updated on our work in the Amazon and other global conservation initiatives. #Biodiversity #Conservation #Sustainability #Amazon #WorldBank #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalConsulting #GreenDevelopment
The Amazon is the most biodiverse and largest tropical forest ecosystem in the world. It is a dynamic place that interacts on a constant basis with people across the eight countries it spans, regulating and maintaining rainfall, sequestering carbon, and generating environmental benefits for local communities and for the whole of the planet. Ensuring the integrity and functioning of the Amazon is a core priority of the Global Environment Facility, whose #AmazonSustainableLandscapes Program has worked for 10 years to bolster the health of the biome through collaboration, coordination, and an integrated approach to protecting primary forests, fostering sustainable land use, and restoring vegetation across national borders. It is the first program bringing all eight sovereign nations of the Amazon together to look beyond their borders and collaborate towards a common goal. While there is much more to do, the outcomes of the The World Bank-managed program are dramatic and a source of hope for those striving for new global biodiversity targets. The Amazon Sustainable Landscapes program, a partnership also involving CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe-, WWF, FAO, UNDP, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), UNIDO, and Conservation International, has supported protected areas equivalent to the size of Panama; prevented carbon emissions equivalent to 18 million vehicles; and directly benefitted 32,000 local people. At a side event during the UN Biodiversity's COP16 Colombia in Cali, representatives involved with the program from across the Amazon came together to share lessons and stress the need for continued investment in collaborative solutions, particularly in light of the recent severe drought that has affected the region, with stark effects for ecosystems, wildlife, and peoples’ livelihoods, food sources, and even ability to go to school or vote when low water levels prevent transit by boat. “The last two years have been very dramatic,” Claude Gascon, GEF Director of Programs, told the event, stressing the need for continued long-term partnership for sustained health of the Amazon. “We are at about 80 percent forest cover. We need to maintain not just the forest cover but the rivers, and work together towards getting Amazonia on a pathway to a different, more sustainable model of economic and social development.”

This article is well worth a read on recent developments in digital transfer of genetic information (called Digital Sequence Information or DSI) especially in relation to rare plants and animals across international borders, who benefits (big pharma vs. who loses (developing countries/Indigenous Peoples)? But there could be positives which may benefit global biodiversity. https://lnkd.in/gGZUM42W #Biodiversity #GeneticInformation #DSI #Vaccines #DNA #Pharmaceuticals #COP16 #Cali #UNBiodiversity #Biopiracy #ConservationFinance #BiodiversityFinance

Following our recent blog article on Financing (see here: https://shorturl.at/SZZSW), see this useful resource coming out of COP16 in Cali this week including guidebooks on Biodiversity Net Gain (England), Habitat Banks (Columbia), Mitigation Banks (US) and Voluntary Nature-based Markets systems. Please reshare #GreenFinance #BiodiversityFinance #Biodiversity #NetGain #HabitatBanking #MitigationBanking #VNbMs #COP16 #Cali #PeaceWithNature #NBSAPs #GBF #GlobalBiodiversityFramework
To meet the target of unlocking $200 billion p.a into nature restoration, it will be key to align National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)—designed by governments to deliver on the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework (GBF) targets—with companies and financial institutions that are adopting nature strategies and exploring market-based investments. These examples show that alignment and integration are possible: 🌿 England’s Biodiversity Net Gain 🦜 Colombia’s habitat banks 💵 US's mitigation banks 🌳 Voluntary nature-based markets With partners United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), UNDP, BIOFIN - Biodiversity Finance Initiative and Environmental Policy Innovation Center, we’ve launched an initial four guidebooks to support signatories to the GBF to replicate or adapt models that can unlock private finance for net nature restoration. In addition to further guidebooks and case studies, we will be looking to support the replication of various models on the ground. More information on expressions of interest will be shared through the Community of Practice. https://lnkd.in/eqAhnPEP #COP16 event: https://lnkd.in/exK55-zt
