🥳 Aktuell ist bei uns Hochsaison, weil Spendensaison. Eins meiner Highlights in diesem Jahr bisher?

  • What a landmark moment to be elected Oxford Union president, Anita Okunde! This is a testament to your dedication and ability to inspire those around you. We are so excited to see you create history at this old establishment. At Lafiya Nigeria we had the pleasure of witnessing your commitment to our mission as our intern and we hope you will bring the same energy in this new role. The most sincere congratulations from our team, and we're very proud of you.

#4 Black Future leader 2023/24 | PPE undergraduate at University of Oxford | President Elect at the Oxford Union

Thrilled to Announce: I Have Been Elected the first EVER black woman President-Elect of the Oxford Union! I am deeply honored to share that I have been elected as the first-ever Black woman to serve as President-Elect of the Oxford Union, as well as a proud state school student. This milestone feels incredibly meaningful to me, not only as a personal achievement, but also as a reflection of the power of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to change. I firmly believe merit should be built, not bought. After serving five terms on committee, I have had so much opportunity to build so many skills. As state-educated individuals in spaces like these become rarer, I am committed to representing diverse voices and championing inclusivity in this historic institution. It is an immense privilege to have the opportunity to serve as President, and I am excited to bring my vision to life for all those the Oxford Union exists to serve in Trinity term! To God be all the glory—John 15:7. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey. From the people who ran with me and those who voted for me. I look forward to leading with integrity, purpose, and passion. I am also now no longer a student, so do let me know any job opportunities! :) #oxfordunion #oxforduniversity #representationmatters

  • We are so thrilled to announce that we have received a transformative grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand our operations into Kano State, Nigeria. This milestone underscores a shared commitment to empowering women with life-saving contraceptive options and reproductive healthcare, particularly in underserved communities. Specifically, this grant aims to address the challenges of the lack of trained family planning personnel, contraceptive stockouts at the community level, and misconceptions and low levels of contraceptive use within Kano. Full press release below in the article.

In celebration of World Contraception Day, Lafiya Nigeria supported a family planning outreach in Wurno LGA, Sokoto State, that made a real impact. During the event, 142 women received personalised counselling on family planning. Most of them chose to use Sayana Press, a self-injectable contraceptive, that they received from Lafiya free of charge. This milestone reflects the growing awareness and acceptance of family planning in the state, thanks to the dedication of our team. Feedback from local health authorities has been overwhelmingly positive, recognising the strides we have made in ensuring access to contraceptive options. Partners, such as MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices and Jhpiego have also highlighted our reliable supply chain as a key factor in making these resources available when and where they’re needed. These collaborations open doors for future partnerships to expand self-care innovations and improve health outcomes.

On 17th of September, 2024, my colleague and I had the honor of paying a visit to Director General SPHMB Kano on behalf of Lafiya Nigeria An advocacy visit was paid prior to that day by our Senior colleagues but, this was our first encounter with him as the POs in the state representing our organisation. The quick meeting yielded a positive result. We didn’t only met the DG and introduced ourselves, but had the opportunity to meet with the new director of Public health in SMoH which we secured an appointment to meet with him later. A special thanks to the SPHMB and SMoH as whole for their support and welcoming us into the state. Looking forward to seeing this project take off and succeed in the future. With collective and consistent effort, I believe we could change the fate #maternalmortality and #Familyplanning in Nigeria. Slowly but surely ! #LafiyaNigeria #MaternalmortalityinNigeria #FamilyplanninginNigeria #MaternalandchildhealthinNigeria

How would you describe the emotions you experience when you finally accomplish something you've put so much effort into? Is it fulfillment? Gratitude? Relief ? Or overlap between all these ? On 29th of August, 2024 Lafiya Nigeria Stakeholders meeting convened in Kano. This marked the beginning of the project implementation in the state. The meeting was aimed to sensitize stakeholders about the organization’s aim, missions and intended ways of implementing the project in the state.  Attended by Directors from the primary health care development agency (SPHCDA), Family planning focal person, Reproductive Health Coordinator, MCH coordinators from the 24 LGAs involved as well as the 6 Zonal MCHs. Participants were taken through a detailed presentation, elucidating the objectives of the organization and its programs. This was a milestone for the team in Kano and the organization in whole. Subsequently, this would impact #Familyplanning and #Maternalmortality in positive light in Kano state. To new beginnings and greater impact !!! #lafiyanigeria #familyplanning #maternalmortality #familyplanninginkan

  • Thanks to The New York Times for putting a spotlight on women's health in sub-Saharan Africa. Far too often, the perspectives of our users are not heard. In the past decade or so, many more women in rural Nigeria for instance, have opted for contraceptive options that allow them more agency and flexibility, such as injectables like the Sayana Press. To their frustration, they are not able to source these options near them. This is where Lafiya Nigeria, comes in. Our model operates exactly on the pain points of the healthcare system, strengthening personnel (through upskilling our Lafiya Sisters) and supply. We work alongside ecosystem partners like Marie Stopes International, featured in the article, to amplify not just our reach, but our collective impact. https://lnkd.in/d4YukPiq
