  • 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: 𝗔 𝗤&𝗔 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗝𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗘 𝗞𝗘𝗜𝗝𝗦𝗘𝗥 We spoke with Joris De Keijser from Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services, facilitator of our upcoming Pharma Sustainability Integrates panel discussion - Zero carbon by design: Building carbon efficiency into new product design and manufacture. Joris will be joined by panellists Mark Talford from Innovate UK , Steve Swallow from AstraZeneca, Deborah McElhone from Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, CPI, and Wouter Biesemans from Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services for a deep dive into conserving natural resources across our industry. 📅𝟮𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 | 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖, 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 ❓ What factors are driving the push for sustainability in pharma, and why is now the time to act? "Internal climate pledges, regulatory frameworks, and reporting are all important, as is the need for transparency throughout. We’re already seeing the effects of climate change, so now really is the time to act. Postponing action will only require more drastic measures." ❓ What do you see as the biggest challenge the sector faces in achieving meaningful sustainability goals? "Regulatory framework results in extra costs when changes are implemented and there is limited willingness to pay a premium. It also takes time to make big changes e.g. moving from a linear, petro-based to a circular based process. On top of that, the understanding of product carbon footprint is complex due to different influencing factors that can result in a perceived lack of ownership and an unwillingness to drive change. As mentioned though, the key issue is that the longer society waits to make changes, then the greater the efforts will have to be - there is a cost of doing nothing. The industry could (and should) co-drive the regulatory landscape to make changes towards sustainable productions more feasible." ❓ What are some of the most promising strategies or innovations you've seen for reducing the environmental footprint of pharmaceutical operations? "In general, there is a lack of regulatory framework that is fit for net-zero purposes so improving this could help. For example, changes to the policies could make solvent recycling easier to implement. Using solvents from circular sources, such as carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) facilities is another possibility. Realistic changes are technologies such as continuous flow manufacturing, biocatalysis, and mechanochemistry." Join us at #PharmaSustainabilityIntegrates 2025 to be part of the conversation on revolutionising the future of medicine with eco-innovative design, and paving the way to a zero-carbon footprint. • 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮 Sustainability in pharma needs more than good intentions—it requires robust data, measurable impact, and clear accountability. At Pharma Sustainability Integrates 2025, we’re tackling how the industry can move from pledges to evidence-based action. Here’s a taster of two of our upcoming panel discussions: 📈 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀: 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 How do we ensure we’re tracking what truly drives sustainability? This panel will explore the science behind key sustainability metrics, data integrity and measuring real-world impact. Chaired by: Nazneen Rahman (YewMaker & AstraZeneca ) Panellists: Jason LaRoche (Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine), Niklaus Künzle (Lonza ), Marijn Verhoef (Access to Medicine Foundation), Martin Chilcott ( Manufacture 2030 | M2030) 🌱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆? • Ahead of 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, we spoke with Adam Liddle, Head of Sustainability at RoslinCT to find out more about his thoughts on sustainability in the sector: ❓ What do you see as the biggest challenge the sector faces in achieving meaningful sustainability goals? "There are many. Political, regulatory, industry collaboration. The global landscape of sustainability is inconsistent across geographies, and businesses need this to be as simple as possible to avoid spending too much time focusing on the metrics and reporting when the focus should be on delivering treatments to patients as effectively as possible - without doing any environmental harm." ❓ How do you envision collaboration driving sustainability across the sector? "Sustainability goals can rarely be achieved by going it alone. Industry and supply chain collaboration is essential to addressing issues such as water consumption, material sourcing and waste management within the industry. Circularity within the sector can provide a range of economic benefits but it is literally impossible to achieve without multiple parties coming together to identify solutions." ❓ Looking ahead, what major innovations or shifts do you anticipate will define sustainability in our industry over the next five years? "The shift to more digital ways of working will accelerate many sustainability opportunities through intensification of manufacturing processes and reduction of manual labour-intensive methods. Also, the rapid emergence of more cell and gene therapies will transform the lives of patients across the world, but currently these treatments are few, expensive, and take a long time to bring to market. As we innovate to discover more efficient manufacturing methods for these types of treatments, we can balance environmental impact with social good." Adam will be joining the panel on future proofing at #PharmaSustainabilityIntegrates, exploring how to empower future pharma leaders for sustainability 🌍 🌱 How can sustainability training be embedded into corporate culture? 👐 What actions are driving diversity and inclusion in pharma to ensure its future? 🎓 How can apprenticeships and early-career initiatives help tackle key sustainability challenges? Chaired by: Phoebe Garfinkel – HR Director, AstraZeneca UK Panellists: Adam Liddle – RoslinCT, Elishia A. – AstraZeneca, Ria Harris – DHL Supply Chain, Beth KnightLloyds Banking Group Sustainability in pharma isn’t just about tackling today’s challenges—it’s about embedding long-term change into company culture, leadership and training. This session is sure to bring about a fascinating discussion with some great takeaways and support to take forward.
