Seeing as AI is making the headlines, we thought we'd repost a bit of coverage we received for SmartSocks® in the Daily Mirror on Friday. Thanks for spotting it Jacqui Arnold (formerly Ramus)!
About us
Did you know that nearly 1 million people have dementia in the UK? People with dementia can find it hard to communicate their needs, so become distressed and agitated, sometimes aggressive. Having witnessed his own great-grandmother’s journey with dementia, our founder, Zeke Steer, decided to do all he could to improve the quality of life for those with dementia, as well as those who care for them. Our solution is SmartSocks™, that incorporate sensors and electronics which gather data on the early signs of agitation before relaying it to our Cloud servers where our AI software alerts carers quickly and discretely via a smartphone app.

2024 has been quite a year for Milbotix, although not without its challenges! We've continued to receive some amazing support, both here in the UK and from further afield. There are far too many people to thank everyone here individually (we know, we've made a list). That said, we'd particularly like to say thank you to our hard working team for all the hours they have put in this year. We'd also like to thank Alzheimer's Society, University of the West of England and Innovate UK for their continued support. Thanks also to Shlomi Haar at Imperial College London for his support of SmartSocks® and for Byron Creese at Brunel University of London for taking SmartSocks® to the Alzheimer's Association®’s International Conference (AAIC) in Philadelphia this Summer, to mention just two of our many research partners. We'd also like to welcome John Mathers of the British Design Fund for joining us as Chair, and Dr Kumi Pillay who has joined us as Chief Medical Officer. Thank you to all those who invited us to speak and share our work with you, and finally, thank you to our investors, both long-standing and new, whose support is so critical to our mission. 2025 looks set to be an action packed year as SmartSocks® complete their final external certification. If all goes to plan, we will be delivering our first SmartSocks®DISCOVERY kits to researchers in February, and commencing pilots of SmartSocks®COMFORT in care homes. We look forward to piloting with Aria Care, Iris Care Group and other organisations. In the meantime, all of us at Milbotix would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! It's been a fantastic morning at the Daring Capital pitch presentation in London, where I’ve been representing Milbotix alongside founder and inventor Zeke Steer, in my role as Chairman for the company. Milbotix’s SmartSocks is groundbreaking technology designed to improve care for individuals with dementia. They monitor vital signs and use data to alert caregivers when wearers are becoming distressed, allowing for timely intervention. The company’s goal is to transform dementia care, reducing anxiety and improving quality of life for patients both in care homes and their own homes. Since launching, Milbotix has secured funding from Innovate UK and British Design Fund, amongst others, and has won multiple awards. #startup #dementiacare #innovation

A team at UWE Bristol and Milbotix have won Innovate UK funding to deliver an initiative that seeks to re revolutionise dementia care with advanced wearable technology. Dementia poses significant challenges globally. It often leads to communication difficulties, and people with dementia may become easily confused by new situations. Milbotix is developing SmartSocks®, a family of sock-based wearable devices. SmartSocks® holds the potential to significantly improve dementia care by providing real-time insights into patients’ emotional states. Milbotix now seeks to work with UWE Bristol to adapt SmartSocks® to allow the device to be used in healthcare. This will involve understanding differences in user-need (both for clinicians and patients) in a more acute setting. Currently, best practice is to manually record patient behaviour at set times of day. SmartSocks® can provide significantly more information at a lower cost. Data can be readily assimilated to allow better behaviour management plans to be put in place more rapidly. Zeke Steer Jac Fennell Marcela MUNERA Carlos Cifuentes
