While red mite levels may decrease slightly with cooler weather, these pests can still cause performance issues in birds year-round. It's crucial for producers to continue monitoring for red mite throughout the winter to prevent infestations on-farm. Top tips for monitoring red mite: • Assess the severity of the issue by inspecting small cracks and crevices where mites tend to hide - using trapping systems to detect their presence. • Remember, red mite are more active at night, so daytime visual inspections may not accurately reflect the infestation level. • Implement strong biosecurity measures and thorough cleaning routines to help keep infestation levels low. #TheScienceofHealthierAnimals #RedMite

Red mite is a common issue for nearly all UK layer operations, heightening risks such as stress and anaemia in birds. If left unchecked, these infestations can weaken immunity and increase mortality rates. Today, we highlight Ifan Huws, our new Key Account Manager for poultry, whose career path and interest in technological innovation and developing start-ups are key to his new role at MSD Animal Health. Having started his career with a placement at Moy Park, Ifan then moved to Noble Foods where he gained extensive knowledge of broiler and free-range farm-to-fork supply chains. More recently, Ifan has worked as an agricultural specialist consultant to start-up companies helping develop sustainability strategies. In addition to his passion for his career, he enjoys helping on the family farm and playing sport. “I was keen to join MSD Animal Health because it has expertise all over the world to draw from. They're a very forward thinking company and a market leader in a lot of what they do. “They’re consultants and help the supply chain improve on their efficiency which is what I am really interested in.”
