We bring scientists and journalists together to protect the sea, because our existence depends on the ocean’s health.

About us

The ocean must thrive for the Earth to survive. Our mission is to protect the ocean, for all our planet’s life and for ourselves - because our existence depends on the ocean’s health. Protecting the ocean is in all of our interests. It’s fundamental to the planet’s and our survival because this is Planet Ocean more than it is Planet Earth. Our client is the ocean. We undertake Missions and Initiatives - driven by urgency, curiosity and the determination to use the knowledge we gain about the ocean, to serve people and our planet. Through our missions and initiatives, we commit to: - Act with urgency to protect the ocean. - Work with ocean nations to put control of their ocean in their hands. - Increase knowledge through applied research and to share it. - Contribute to ocean conservation policy locally and globally. - To inspire people through public engagement.

The next Ocean Census 'Species Discovery Workshop' begins today at the Universidad Católica del Norte in Chile. This past July and August, the Ocean Census Science Network joined forces with the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) team on an expedition to the Nazca Ridge, an underwater mountain range 900 miles off the coast of Chile. During this expedition, scientists identified 20 potentially new marine species and mapped a new seamount. This mission was the third in a series of SOI expeditions to the Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges in 2024, following discoveries in January and February that revealed over 150 species previously unknown to science. Many of these species and known fauna were observed in new areas, expanding scientists’ understanding of marine biodiversity. The new discoveries will be registered with the Ocean Census, adding to the catalogue of marine biodiversity and facilitating future species discovery. As part of this effort, Universidad Católica del Norte will host the next Ocean Census Species Discovery Workshop in Chile. Over the next 3 weeks, scientists, including five taxonomists from the Ocean Census Science Network, will analyze the material collected during the expeditions. The workshop will fast-track species discovery and ensure type material is preserved at the National Museum of Chile. How do you engage the public with scientific research? This week, the Ocean Census communications team is excited to be joining the wider marine science communications community at #CommOcean 2024 conference. CommOcean takes place every two years and features expert-led workshops, networking sessions, and discussions on the latest trends in ocean science communication. We're looking forward to connecting with fellow communicators, exchanging ideas, and exploring ways to make vital yet often complex ocean research more accessible to the public, policymakers, stakeholders, and those outside the scientific community. Engaging diverse audiences in marine science is important for driving informed action and creating a deeper understanding of our ocean. Are you at #CommOcean this week? We are pleased to announce that Ocean Census are supporting an additional 7 taxonomists in the discovery of new species, through the Ocean Census Awards. Meet the awardees below! 👇 Supporting taxonomists is fundamental to the Ocean Census mission. Empowering taxonomists to uncover and document new species expands our knowledge of marine biodiversity. Understanding marine biodiversity allows us to better protect species at risk and understand their roles in our planet’s health. The discoveries funded by the Ocean Census Awards will be formally registered to the Ocean Census database. 🌐 In addition, we invite other scientists to register their own species discoveries to the Ocean Census. By creating this global repository, we can collaboratively build a comprehensive record of marine life.
