Yesterday the Netherlands Innovation Network UK hosted a UK-NL event at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Kingdom on British-Dutch research collaboration on the topic of Critical Raw Materials. The afternoon kicked off with expert briefings from the Dutch (Elmer Rietveld) and the UK side (Gavin Mudd). They presented their ideas for research opportunities in the CRM field between both countries. Gavin additionally gave an insightful overview of the soon to be published new criticality methodology for the UK. A panel discussion with panelists Paul Ekins, Rossi Kevin, Luc Kikkert and Iain Gulland further explored research opportunities, focusing, among other things, on how circular economy concepts could and should be integrated better in CRM research calls. The final part of the afternoon was a workshop, where UK and Dutch researchers discussed potential consortia around CRM Horizon Europe calls. It’s clear that there is lots we can be doing together on this agenda! Many thanks to the presenters and panelists, and especially to David Peck for moderating the event and for all his support in the run up to the event. We are thrilled to share our first whitepaper, Hardware for Educating Quantum Engineers! 🎉 The whitepaper, published in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, was co-written by one of Aquark's founders Alexander Jantzen, alongside Gijs Hijmans, Program Manager for quantum technology at TUe. At Aquark, we understand that quantum technologies have the potential to unlock disruptive capabilities. However, this is only possible if we have the right talent in the industry - access to training and education is an essential requirement in securing quantum success for the future. Together with TUe, we highlight the opportunities to harness the strengths of the UK and the Netherlands in the context of cold atom quantum technology for education and accelerating research. A huge thank you to Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Kingdom for creating the programme that helped us to bring this project to life. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with our European partners, with whom our relationships are so important to the development of quantum technologies and the ultimate success of international quantum strategies. 🚀 Keen to find out more? 📣 We are very happy to announce the publication of 'Hardware for Educating Quantum Engineers', a white paper written by Eindhoven University of Technology and Aquark Technologies, resulting from our first call for proposals. Both the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have designated #quantumtechnology as a priority technology that will revolutionise many aspects of life and bring benefits to the economy and society of both countries. 👩🎓 Achieving these benefits will require significant resources in terms of time, materials, financing and in particular talent. However, quantum equipment required for educational purposes and (re-)training of engineers is often prohibitively expensive and requires a lot of finesse to use. To address this issue, new hardware needs to be developed with a primary focus on cost and ease of use. 🤝 In this white paper the authors argue that the development of inexpensive, robust hardware for educating quantum engineers represents a prime opportunity for UK/NL collaboration, utilising the strengths of both countries in the context of cold atom quantum technology. They make a set of recommendations that focus on enabling immediate and direct collaboration between the UK and NL, in line with the MOU that was signed last year, with outcomes that will benefit both economies, delivery of their quantum strategies and technology development. The Netherlands Innovation Network UK would like to thank Alexander Jantzen and Gijs Hijmans for this relevant and timely paper and look forward to fostering further collaboration between the Netherlands and the UK, starting with our programme around the UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase this week! 🖥️ Driving AI Innovation in the UK and Beyond: new sector report and investment 🖥️ The UK's AI sector is continuing its growth. A new report from a consortium led by Perspective Economics reveals a 17% increase in the number of #AI companies from 2022 to 2023, alongside a 29% boost in AI-related employment. Revenues and GVA have surged as well, underscoring the sector’s economic impact. London, the South East, and the East of England remain central to this activity, though sectors like automotive, manufacturing, and agriculture are seeing AI growth across regions. (source: https://lnkd.in/edr3NnFe) In other news, imec (Cambridge, UK) has secured £3 million in funding from the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) to develop a pioneering software framework for large AI model training. This innovative platform aims to address the growing need for efficient and sustainable training processes by optimising energy usage, compute efficiency, and memory management. Leveraging its expertise in system-technology co-optimisation (STCO), imec’s work will advance the early-stage exploration of the optimal system and technology configurations needed for training large AI models, driving both sustainability and technology breakthroughs. (source: https://lnkd.in/e_g-gc8J) These developments reinforce the UK’s status as a dynamic hub for AI research and application, with Dutch and European organisations poised to benefit from new collaborative opportunities. #AI #Innovation #ArtificialIntelligence #AITraining Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IA (Netherlands Innovation Network) Juri Roerink Marjolein Bouwers Martijn Bergmans Pier de Vries Steve Beckers Sagar Dolas Pieter van de Glind

📣 Call for Proposals - A new window on the Universe 📣 Curved spacetime, black holes, and the evolutionary history of the Universe speak immensely to the imagination of the general public as well as science enthusiasts, and yet physics is still perceived as a discipline only accessible for the intellectual elite. Physicist and gravitational wave expert Gideon Koekoek (Maastricht University) is on a mission to demystify the complexities of physics. In a wonderful lecture he held at The Royal Institution, Gideon let us in on the secret that nature repeats the same rules over and over again, so that once we understand one case, we can understand more abstract areas too. In this lecture (see below) he prepares the viewer to appreciate, and understand, the exciting discoveries that are coming our way in the next few years, thanks to the plans to build the Einstein Telescope (see more information below). The UK is an important partner to make this possible. To that end, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Kingdom is inviting both Dutch and British companies, research institutes and professional associations to submit joint NL-UK proposals for writing a white paper on gravitational waves, and other key enabling technologies that will contribute to the building and development of the Einstein Telescope. For example, proposals on topics such as vibration-free cooling, better sensors, new algorithms to isolate gravitational wave signals from noise and ultra-high vacuum system are also of interest. Per white paper €5,000 is available in funding. This funding can be used to explore a potential partnership between British and Dutch organisations, or to expand on a topic both parties are already working on. We encourage applicants to use this opportunity to highlight interesting bilateral innovations and R&D initiatives. For more information, the eligibility criteria and the required proposal submission template contact the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Kingdom: Marjolein Bouwers or Laura van Voorst Vader ❗ The deadline for submitting proposals is Friday 22 November 2024 ❗ The underground Einstein Telescope will be Europe's most advanced observatory for gravitational waves. It will allow researchers to hear black holes collide and learn about the early universe. The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany are jointly studying whether to host this world-class observatory. #gravitationalwaves Juri Roerink Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IA (Netherlands Innovation Network) Iris Leussink Pier de Vries Lodewijk Smoor Hanno Wurzner https://lnkd.in/gHGb9KQe
