  • North Ayrshire Council is warning fly-tippers that they are very likely to get caught and may have to pay a fine and clean-up costs. Statistics published recently by the Scottish Government show that the council issued the most Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) for fly-tipping of all local authorities in Scotland during 2022-23. The National Litter and Fly-Tipping Strategy Year 1 update and Year 2 action plan show that North Ayrshire is ahead of Glasgow City Council in second place when it comes to issuing FPNs – despite the city receiving a much higher volume of reports on fly-tipping. A total of 201 penalties were issued by North Ayrshire Council throughout this period with the next highest issuing authority being Glasgow City Council, which issued 126. • Grapes and tangerines are among healthy foods being grown in the grounds of an Irvine primary school. Children and staff at Elderbank Primary have teamed up with parent Yousif Al Ahmed to create a garden inside a polytunnel. The growing area was created a few years ago through the Pupil Equity Fund and it has gone from strength to strength. Councillor Shaun Macaulay, Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, said: "I think many people will be surprised that things like grapes and tangerines can thrive in our climate! This project shows what can be achieved when people of all ages - and from all walks of life - work together." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e3z42nPi

  • A historic building in Irvine town centre is being given a new lease of life. Work is well under way to give a new start to the former King’s Arms Hotel in the town’s High Street. Once building work is complete, it will provide six much-needed new homes for council tenants. Provost Anthea Dickson has visited the site with Irvine West Councillors Shaun Macaulay, Scott Gallacher and Chloe Robertson to view progress on the work, which started earlier this summer with McLaughlin Construction. Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Communities and Islands, said: " It’s fantastic to see the progress already made at the former King’s Arms. "The façade of the building is being retained as it remains a landmark in its own right although the rest of the building is being completely redeveloped from the ground up." • The volume of litter being responsibly binned by North Ayrshire LitterLotto app users has increased by almost 30 per cent.   The Council has teamed up with partners to provide the free LitterLotto app, which offers rewards to encourage people to bin litter responsibly.   The LitterLotto partnership, facilitated by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful offers users the chance to Bin it to win it! by winning a monthly prize and weekly jackpots.   A monthly cash prize of £100 is up-for-grabs in North Ayrshire, and every time you responsibly bin a piece of litter you get another entry into the LitterLotto UK-wide weekly jackpot of £1,000. Throughout October, 16,123 pieces of rubbish were binned by app users compared with 12,647 in September – showing a 27 per cent hike. Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy, said: “During October, the number of items being binned increased considerably, and it is great to see people engaging so enthusiastically with the app." Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eA3ceX2B #SustainableNA
